Spying on Beavers From Space Could Help Save California

For the first time in four centuries, it’s good to be a beaver. Long persecuted for their pelts and reviled as pests, the dam-building rodents are today hailed by scientists as ecological saviors. Their ponds and wetlands store water in the face of drought, filter out pollutants, furnish habitat for endangered species, and fight wildfires. In California, Castor canadensis is so prized that the state recently committed millions to its restoration. While beavers’ benefits are indisputable, however, our knowledge remains riddled with gaps. We don’t know how many are out there, or which direction their populations are trending, or which watersheds most desperately need a beaver infusion. Few states have systematically surveyed them; moreover, many beaver ponds are tucked into remote streams fa...

California’s Fast-Food Casualties – WSJ

California’s $20 an hour minimum wage for fast-food workers doesn’t take effect until April, but the casualties are already piling up. Pizza Hut franchises this week told more than 1,200 delivery drivers that they’ll lose their jobs before the higher wage kicks in. Gov. Gavin Newsom no doubt sends condolences, though what he should send is an apology. Democrats in Sacramento this autumn enacted the $20 minimum wage for fast-food workers in a deal between restaurants and labor unions. When you’ve got a gun pointed at your head, you’ll hand over your wallet, keys and bank account pin number.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. The National Fight Over LGBTQ+ Rights Began In This California Suburb

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. ― Pastor Casey Tinnin leads a congregational church in the Sacramento suburb of Loomis. He is also gay. After one Sunday service this past January, a man named Kyle approached, looking for some advice. As Tinnin remembers the conversation, Kyle said that he and his wife Alley had a transgender teenager and were worried about what living in Loomis would be like. Tinnin understood the concern.Loomis sits in Placer County, an island of political and cultural red in the sea of California blue. It has relatively few ethnic and racial minorities, at least by California standards, with a significant population of Mormons and an even larger number of evangelicals. In the western part of the county that includes Loomis and the other Sacramento suburbs, many attend a Pentecost...

California Dreamin’ of a Government That Actually Works

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has expressed an affinity for taking on “big, hairy, audacious goals.” But while state and local governments in the Golden State swing for the fences, they too often fail to handle the basics.Sacramento continues to spend billions on a first-in-the-nation high-speed rail line in the Central Valley despite not having a plan to connect the system to the densely populated Bay Area and Los Angeles Basin. Twenty-five years after voters approved the project, zero miles of track have been laid and service isn’t projected to start until the 2030s.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. The Great Blue to Red State Migration Continues

The migrant border mess is benefiting progressive states like New York, California and Illinois in one respect: It’s offsetting some of their population loss from droves of taxpayers fleeing to lower-cost and low-tax states. That’s one lesson from new Census Bureau state population data released this week. The U.S. population increased by 1.6 million between July 2022 and July 2023, with states in the South accounting for about 1.4 million of the growth. Leading the boom were Texas (473,453), Florida (365,205), Georgia (116,077), South Carolina (90,600) and Tennessee (77,512). Driving their growth was migration from other states.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8
