On Pride Weekend, the Stonewall Visitor Center Opens

Good morning. It’s Friday. Today, and on Fridays through the summer, we’ll focus on things to do in New York over the weekend.Diana Rodriguez, the chief executive of Pride Live, which runs the new Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center, pointed to an old-fashioned jukebox.“Go ahead, give it a whirl,” she said.I dropped in a Stonewall-branded coin and chose a song. The machine whirred, for five seconds, 10 seconds, 15 seconds, as Rodriguez explained that it was the same model as the one that was at the Stonewall Inn on the night of the Stonewall uprising 55 years ago — the event that ushered in an era of gay pride and activism for gay rights.Five more seconds passed before the music started — the gospel standard “Oh Happy Day.”The jukebox is just one of the elements that mix past and pr...

What the Impressionist Painter Camille Pissarro Saw in London

His name was Camille Pissarro and he was developing a style of plein-air painting that would soon be called “Impressionism.”Pissarro and a fellow émigré, Claude Monet, only stayed in London for a few months. By April 1874 they were among the painters holding the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris, the subject of a retrospective that runs until July 14 at the Musée d’Orsay and opens on Sept. 8 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.But London was one of their early muses. Monet painted the River Thames and the Palace of Westminster, among other central landmarks, while Pissarro captured scenes in suburbs where houses and train tracks were repl...

For the sixth year, guests flocked to Villa Necchi Campiglio, the 1935 Rationalist-style home designed by the Italian architect Piero Portaluppi. But this year, the cause for celebration was twofold: The event also marked the magazine’s 20th anniversary, and to honor the occasion, T’s editor in chief, Hanya Yanagihara, commissioned the Parisian multidisciplinary artist Ramdane Touhami to oversee the party’s design.“There are Ts everywhere,” said Touhami of his concept, which involved transforming the magazine’s beveled capital-letter logo into everything from ice cubes to several installations on the villa’s grounds.
