The Challenge of Hiking Up Mount Whitney in California

In 2022, I scaled Mount Marcy, the highest peak in New York State, with my son. That weekend, ecstatic, we looked for another adventure. Some Google searching revealed that Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48, was not out of reach for amateurs like us. I proclaimed that he and I, along with my daughter, would climb it in 2023. In the end, neither of them could make it. Lucy didn’t need much convincing to join me. Hiking had brought exhilarating new challenges and triumphs — and Mount Whitney promised those on a much greater scale. But only a short way up, my lofty ambitions met snowy reality. We’d been told to expect a lot of snow higher up, but we didn’t expect any this low. I had packed an ice ax and crampons, on the strong urging of the owners of a gear store in Lone Pine, th...

John Eastman Addresses California Court’s Disbarment Recommendation

Attorney John Eastman, one of the key architects of Donald Trump’s scheme to overturn the 2020 election, on Thursday addressed the recommendation by a judge that he be disbarred for his role in advancing the former president’s plot to remain in power.State Bar Court of California Judge Yvette Roland recommended last week that Eastman lose his license to practice law in the state due to “serious ethical violations.” These included making false statements that then-Vice President Mike Pence had the authority to delay a count of electoral votes or refuse to certify them on Jan. 6, 2021, the judge said. The California Supreme Court will have the final say on his disbarment.“There’s a lot of water to go under the bridge yet before we get there,” Eastman said on the streaming program “The Absolu...

Biden’s $3.1 Billion Train Ticket to Nowhere

It didn’t get a lot of attention, but last month the White House awarded $3.1 billion to the California High-Speed Rail project. This was supposed to be a bullet train connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles in less than three hours. Instead, its costs keep rising even as the state scales back the plan. Since 2008, when California voters authorized a $10 billion bond issue for the train, they’ve been sold a bill of goods. The original total estimated construction cost to taxpayers was $33 billion. That’s risen to at least $100 billion. The authority decided to offer service between San Francisco and Los Angeles in Phase I, then eventually extend the train service north to Sacramento and south to San Diego. Phase I was to have been completed by 2020. Copyright ©2024 Dow Jones & Company...

Michigan Overcomes Alabama—and Recent History—to Reach National Title Game

Updated Jan. 1, 2024 9:45 pm ETPASADENA, Calif.—Michigan arrived at the Rose Bowl with plenty of baggage. There was the coach, Jim Harbaugh, once again dogged by rumors that he will imminently depart for the National Football League, and with a dismal bowl game record of one win in seven tries. There was its recent history—two previous trips to the College Football Playoff that both ended in losses. There were the twin scandals, yet to be resolved by the NCAA.Copyright ©2024 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

The Welfare-Industrial Complex Is Booming

Dec. 31, 2023 11:23 am ETDrill into the nation’s 3.7% unemployment rate, and you’ll find a growing welfare-industrial complex beneath the seemingly strong labor market. Government, social assistance and healthcare account for 56% of the 2.8 million net new jobs over the past year, and for nearly all gains in blue states such as New York and Illinois. The tens of thousands of migrants pouring into big cities need to be tended to. So do the hundreds of thousands of drug-addled and mentally ill homeless living on the streets. Progressive government doesn’t do anything on the cheap. America’s welfare state has thus become a proverbial Big Dig, and it keeps getting bigger.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8
