Uber will now deliver returns to the post office

Uber drivers will now collect your unwanted gifts and return them in the ride-booking company’s latest addition to its app, the company announced Wednesday.

Uber has added a “return a package” feature to its app in almost 5,000 cities across the United States, allowing customers to leave out up to five prepaid and sealed packages to be returned to UPS, FedEx or a local post office.

The company cited research from the National Retail Federation in February finding that roughly 4 out of 5 customers younger than 30 tend to find returns “very annoying.” In a separate study, the Federation reported that the average return rate in 2022 was 16.5 percent, roughly the same as the previous year.

“With the busy holiday shopping and gifting season fast approaching, we know returns are inevitable — whether it’s the wrong size, the wrong color, or the wrong gift idea entirely,” the company wrote in its release.

The service costs $5 per trip for most users or $3 per trip for members of Uber One, the company’s subscription service.
