The Chanler at Cliff Walk was built in 1873 as a summer home for congressman John Winthrop Chanler and his wife, Margaret Astor Ward. The Chanler is situated on Newport’s popular Cliff Walk.

The property feels less like a hotel and more like a private seaside retreat with beautifully appointed and comfortable spaces throughout.

On our tour, we got to visit The Café at The Chanler, which serves breakfast exclusively for hotel guests; lunch and dinner are open to the public.

The food served at The Chanler has a European influence while still featuring distinctively New England ingredients, like local oysters and fish.

We went to the terrace next, which is equipped with heaters, so the view can be enjoyed even when the weather starts to cool. The space also accommodates weddings.

Outside, the fire pit is a popular gathering space, especially at sunset.

The opulent bathrooms are stocked with amenities by Spanish luxury skincare line Natura Bissé.

The Cliff Lawn is reserved exclusively for overnight guests, while the Meadow Lawn, with both ocean and mansion views, is open to the public. On summer weekends, the Meadow Lawn transforms into the Ca’ del Bosco Wine Garden, where visitors can delight in renowned Franciacorta sparkling wines.
