Pop Music Is Mad. Social Media Loves It

Not everyone is buying it. Despite the study’s findings, “I don’t believe hip-hop lyrics are more angry,” says Dame Aubrey, head of A&R for CMG Records and Management, a music label that represents rappers Moneybagg Yo, BlocBoy JB, and GloRilla. If anything, Aubrey says, what changes we do hear are a product of how music has expanded. It’s simple, Aubrey says: more people, more perspectives. The medium is more accessible now because of the technology available. “There’s just a lot more artists with opportunities to be heard because it basically became a trend to make music.”One major adjustment in all of this is the mechanics of how a song gets popular, and what its popularity generates. In the age of social media, that can often translate into more of the same kinds of sounds, althoug...

The report, which describes the lengths OpenAI, Google and Meta have gone to in order to maximize the amount of data they can feed to their AIs, cites numerous people with knowledge of the companies’ practices. It comes just days after YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said in an interview with Bloomberg Originals that OpenAI’s alleged use of YouTube videos to train its new text-to-video generator, Sora, would go against the platform’s policies.According to the NYT, OpenAI used its Whisper speech recognition tool to transcribe more than one million hours of YouTube videos, which were then used to train GPT-4. Does cord cutting REALLY save you money? It now costs $120 a month to subscribe to Netflix, Hulu and the other main streaming services – as platforms hike prices amid fierce competition

It now costs households over $120 every month to subscribe to nine of the leading streaming services, with the vast majority having increased in price in the last year. Analysis by DailyMail.com found that it would cost Americans $121.41 a month to subscribe to ad-free plans with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Max, Peacock, Paramount+, Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu and Britbox. This sum could climb even higher if households also signed up to other video streaming platforms including ESPN+, NFL+ or YouTube Premium.A 2022 study from market research firm Parks Associates found a quarter of American households subscribe to nine or more streaming services, while 50 percent are signed up to at least four. And in the last year, increased competition has meant that services have hiked their prices - som...

When it comes to children's mental health and privacy, their loss translates into massive gains for social media companies: $11 billion, to be exact. That's according to a new Harvard study that shows social media platforms last year generated $11 billion in revenue from advertising directed at children and teenagers, including nearly $2 billion in ad profits derived from users age 12 and under. Snaphat, TikTok and Youtube reaped the highest share of those billions, approximately 30% - 40% combined, according to the findings.  "Although social media platforms may claim that they can self-regulate their practices to reduce the harms to young people, they have yet to do so, and our study suggests they have overwhelming financial incentives to continue to d...

Google’s Ad Blocker Crackdown Is Growing

Google proposed putting restrictions on this API but has relaxed these somewhat in the new version of Manifest V3. It originally planned to allow browser extensions to make 5,000 content-filtering “rules,” but it has now increased this to 30,000 rules. AdGuard, an ad blocker, has tentatively welcomed some of the revised changes. Elsewhere, uBlock Origin, which uses around 300,000 filtering rules, has created a “lite” version of its extension in response to Manifest V3. The developer behind uBlock Origin says the lite version is not as “capable” as the full version. Meanwhile, browser makers Brave and Firefox say they are introducing work-arounds to stop ad blockers from being impacted by the changes.Supply chain attacks, where malware is implanted in a company's legitimate software and sp...

YouTube and Reels Could Decide India’s Elections

Lilhari believes that his endorsed, stealth political videos can be a significant factor in the upcoming elections. A majority of his Instagram’s reach is among the 16-24 age group. “My viewers will remember the name of the candidate I spent my day with—and it will stay in the memories of the first-time voters, who are young and not very knowledgeable.”Influencers aren’t only useful for promotion—they can help candidates head off bad press. In late October, Deepti Maheswari, the 36-year-old BJP candidate from Rajsamand, in Rajasthan (who is an influencer in her own right), was caught up in a controversy after party workers stormed into her office to protest her selection for the ticket. Maheshwari is from the nearby city of Udaipur; party workers wanted a local candidate. But Bharat Chouh...

YouTube’s Ad Blocker Detection Believed to Break EU Privacy Law

When YouTube detects an ad blocker or other privacy tool that blocks ads as part of its functions, you'll see a warning stating that “Ad blockers violate YouTube's Terms of Service” or “Ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube.” There are a few different versions of this message, including some that entirely prevent you from playing videos and others that allow you to view a number of videos with your blocker enabled before streaming is blocked.A pop-up asking you to turn off your ad blocker is hardly an unusual sight on the internet, but could it be against the law?All versions of YouTube's ad blocker detection that WIRED is aware of use a JavaScript program that runs in the client browser, although YouTube says that it could use non-invasive server-side methods to identify if a video ad s...
