Giancarlo Stanton’s strikeout-heavy start not concerning Aaron Boone

PHOENIX — With a 1-2 count and Diamondbacks ace Zac Gallen on the mound, Giancarlo Stanton waved at a slider well outside the strike zone during the fourth inning of the Yankees’ 7-0 loss on Tuesday. On video, the pitch looked like a ball out of Gallen’s hand. Such things are easier to see on replay than they are in real life when in the box against a Cy Young finalist. However, the moment felt representative of Stanton’s season thus far. While the former MVP homered during the Yankees’ season-opening series in Houston, Stanton entered Wednesday tied for the American League lead with 11 strikeouts over 21 plate appearances. He was hitting .150/.190/.350 over five games. “No,” Aaron Boone said Tuesday when asked if he’s worried about Stanton. “I think he’s healthy. The life is there. The ...

Is the clock winding down on Giancarlo Stanton with the Yankees?

Reading the tea leaves is a dangerous game — especially if you’re Giancarlo Stanton. The writing on the wall in the Bronx is not favorable for the 2017 NL MVP. The club recently acquired superstar outfielder Juan Soto in a deal with the San Diego Padres. Soto is on an expiring contract as he is set to enter free agency after the 2024 season. However, if the package Brian Cashman surrendered to acquire the 25-year-old is any indication, Soto is likely a part of the long-term plans  — or at least the Yankees hope so. Soto’s profile is similar to that of Stanton in a few aspects, the main being a below-average defender in the outfield. The Dominican Native will likely be relegated to DH in the not-so-distant future. The Yankees, for this upcoming season, plan to go with Aaron Judge in cente...

Don’t blame Brian Cashman for Bryce Harper not being a Yankee

Brian Cashman probably didn’t have a particularly great week after sitting through three days of Yankee meetings in Tampa listening to criticism of his analytics department and all that contributed to the disaster (his word) of an 82-80 season in 2023. But one of the most vocal criticisms of Cashman that has re-emerged after Bryce Harper’s .462, three-homer, five RBI destruction of the Braves in the NL Division Series is totally undeserved. The media and fans that are once again killing Cashman for passing on Harper as a free agent in 2018 have forgotten all the circumstances which led to him signing that record 13-year, $330 million contract with the Phillies. Because if Yankee fans are again lamenting that Harper is not in the Bronx, what about the fans of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Ch...

5 biggest storylines in the Yankees’ final week

The Yankees failed to meet their lofty aspirations in 2023, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t worthwhile stories to follow during the season’s final week. With their postseason chances all but gone, the Bombers are poised to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016, which was also the last year the Yankees finished outside of first or second place in the American League East. They enter Sunday fourth in the division behind the Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays, each of whom is currently in line to make the playoffs. For the Yankees, the season’s final week will be about monitoring the progress of young players, helping veterans reach personal achievements and making plans for next year. Here are five things to watch for as the Yankees’ season comes to an end....

Yankees 1st inning outburst leads to series victory over Pirates

The Yankees got off on the right foot Saturday. Estevan Florial’s two-run single in the first inning set the tone for the Bombers’ 6-3 victory over the Pirates. Florial is getting his long-awaited chance to make an impact for the Yanks after grinding through Triple-A for the majority of this season. The 25-year-old is 4-for-22 during his short stint thus far after putting up stellar numbers for Scranton-Wilkes Barre. The outfielder’s .985 OPS in 101 Triple-A games earned him a promotion after Jasson Dominguez’s season-ending injury (torn UCL). Giancarlo Stanton blasted a solo homer in the top of the third giving the Yankees all they would need on offense for a victory as they took a 4-2 lead. The veteran launched his 24th homer of what has been a struggle this season. The 34-year-old is s...

Gerrit Cole’s remains Cy Young frontrunner as Yankees beat Pirates

Gerrit Cole entered Friday night as the frontrunner for the AL Cy Young award and left with the same status. The right-hander toed the mound where it all started in Pittsburgh during the Yanks’ 7-5 win over the Pirates. Cole tossed five innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four. The 33-year-old bent but didn’t break as he didn’t have his best stuff, however, he did just enough to remain in front for the elusive Cy Young award. Former Yankee and now star Twins’ right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray (2.96 ERA) and Mariners’ Luis Castillo (3.08 ERA) are Cole’s competition to capture his first career Cy Young and with just a few starts to go, the Yankees’ starter is in prime position to take home the award. There was a very scary moment on the field during Friday’s game. Relieve...
