Climate Change Is Breaking Insurance. Here’s How Tech Could Save It.

If floodwaters outside a warehouse in Freeport, Texas, owned by private investment firm Postlane Partners rise to 8 inches, an internet-connected sensor will trigger an automatic $3 million payment from an insurance company, a startup called FloodFlash. If the waters rise to 16 inches, the payment will also rise—to $5 million.  This type of policy, called parametric insurance, works like a bet. It has a defined payout, which limits the liability of the insurer. And it comes from a new breed of insurance company, stepping in to shoulder risks that traditional insurers can’t—or won’t—take on, because climate change has made more typical kinds of coverage unprofitable.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Broadcom’s Software Makeover Doesn’t Fully Mask Chip Swings

Broadcom Chief Executive Hock Tan isn’t someone who finds blowing money appetizing. But that $40,000 dinner seems to have gone down well. That was the reported cost for Tan to sit at the table of Chinese President Xi Jinping during a dinner at last month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in San Francisco. It is a notable sum for an executive known for running one of the most tightfisted chip companies in the business. Broadcom spends just 4% of its annual revenue on sales and marketing—compared with 11% on average by companies on the PHLX Semiconductor Index.  Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Double Trouble: Investors Fight the Fed on Two Fronts

Updated Dec. 8, 2023 12:03 am ETInvestors are betting against the Fed—twice over. The first bet is the sudden turn from expecting the Federal Reserve to keep rates higher for longer to instead expecting rapid and deep cuts next year. The second bet is almost the exact opposite, that the Fed will have to keep rates much higher in the long run than it says it will. Treasury yields have come down, but at around 4.1% the 10-year yield remains more than 1.5 percentage points above the Fed’s forecast of long-run interest rates.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
