The Wisconsin Supreme Court Stages a Gerrymander Coup

Progressive state judges are on a partisan political roll. Fresh off the 4-3 Colorado Supreme Court’s banishment of Donald Trump from the ballot, a 4-3 majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Friday overturned precedent and tossed the state’s legislative maps. The four progressive justices ordered the maps redrawn because they violate the state constitution’s requirement that legislative districts be contiguous. Yet the legislative “islands” they fret about contain so few voters that they have no discernible impact on elections. The justices used their existence as a legal excuse.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Wisconsin Supreme Court Orders New Legislative Maps In Redistricting Case Brought By Democrats

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The liberal-controlled Wisconsin Supreme Court overturned Republican-drawn legislative maps on Friday and ordered that new district boundary lines be drawn as Democrats had urged in a redistricting case they hope will weaken GOP majorities. The ruling comes less than a year before the 2024 election in a battleground state where four of the six past presidential elections have been decided by fewer than 23,000 votes, and Republicans have built large majorities in the Legislature under maps they drew over a decade ago.The court ruled 4-3 in favor of Democrats who argued that the legislative maps are unconstitutional because districts drawn aren’t contiguous. They also argued that the Supreme Court violated the separation of powers doctrine.“Because the current state legi...

A Looming Judicial Coup in Wisconsin

Democrats fought to elect Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz this spring so she could help them retake control of the state Legislature through a rewrite of the state’s political maps. Now the court’s liberal majority is going through contortions to deliver on that anti-democratic judicial promissory note.On Tuesday the Justices heard oral arguments in a case that challenges the state’s legislative district maps and would give the Justices broad authority to draw new ones. But the court declined to hear claims that the maps are a partisan gerrymander, agreeing instead to consider the Trojan horse of whether geographically splintered political districts justify throwing out the maps altogether. Will Judges Kill School Choice in Wisconsin?

When progressives took control of the Wisconsin Supreme Court with the election of Justice Janet Protasiewicz in April, they began lining up petitions to overturn policies they dislike. One of the first targets is Wisconsin’s school-choice program, which gives more than 50,000 children the chance at a better education.According to the lawsuit, funded by the progressive Minocqua Brewing Company SuperPac, Wisconsin’s choice program violates the state’s requirement that public funds be used for “public purposes.” The petition for original action at the state Supreme Court calls school choice a “cancer” and a “predatory scheme” and says the state Legislature “has been attacking Wisconsin’s public schools under the guise of providing school choice for over a decade.” Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones ...

Liberal Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Rejects GOP Call To Recuse On Redistricting Cases

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A newly elected liberal Wisconsin Supreme Court justice, who has called Republican-drawn electoral districts “rigged,” declined to recuse herself on Friday from a pair of redistricting lawsuits.Justice Janet Protasiewicz’s decision to remain on the cases increases the chance that Republicans, who control the Legislature and drew the maps, may proceed with the unprecedented step of impeaching her. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has threatened impeachment if she doesn’t step down.Vos had no immediate comment on her decision, saying he needed to first speak with his attorney.Republicans argue she has pre-judged the cases, which could result in new, more Democrat-friendly maps being drawn before the 2024 election. In her 64-page order, Protasiewicz said she understood that the...
