The Capital Has a Bad Case of Year-End Panic

Sometimes Washington needs to scare itself silly to get anything done. This year’s repeated threats of government shutdown are classic examples, even if the crisis has not been permanently averted but merely deferred to early 2024. The current panic is over U.S. assistance to Ukraine, which is set to run out at a moment when Russia has successfully stalled Ukraine’s counter-offensive and the onset of winter has brought a new round of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure. For President Biden, who has repeatedly promised Ukraine that America would be there “as long as it takes,” basic credibility is on the line. For weeks, he and his Democratic allies in the Senate have tried and failed to pry a deal from their G.O.P. colleagues, who have set increased border funding ...

Joe Biden’s Ukraine Emergency – WSJ

The Senate voted Wednesday to block $110.5 billion in aid for Ukraine, Israel and U.S. allies in the Pacific, but this is best understood as kabuki-theater politics. Perhaps President Biden will now get serious about striking the kind of bipartisan compromise he said in 2020 that he was good at pulling off. Democratic leader Chuck Schumer knew the Senate vote would fail because Republicans said they’d filibuster it. All 49 of them did. But Mr. Schumer held the vote anyway to appease his left flank and because he wants to blame the GOP if no aid eventually passes. The Distrustful Generation – WSJ

Editor’s note: In this Future View, students discuss declining trust in American governmental and political institutions. Next week we’ll ask, “Nearly half of Americans 18 to 29 favor socialism. Why does this generation seem so divided from older generations? Has social media played a large role? Academic institutions? Or is Gen Z less divided from older generations than we think?” Students should click here to submit opinions of fewer than 250 words before Dec. 5. The best responses will be published that night.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

White House Reporter Applied For Taylor Swift Job: Report

Who’s the Swiftie in the White House briefing room?A “very established” White House reporter was reportedly among hundreds of applicants for the Taylor Swift reporter position that made headlines when Gannett listed it in September.“We were very pleased with the caliber of the pool that we had,” Michael Anastasi, editor of the Tennessean and Gannett’s vice president of local news, told Variety.“It ran the gamut from veteran hard-news reporters, including at least one very established White House reporter, to Swifties who have blogs and are influencers,” he added. The job listing sought “an experienced, video-forward journalist to capture the music and cultural impact of Taylor Swift” who “will identify why the pop star’s influence only expands, what her fanbase stands for in pop culture, ...
