British Airways to use new real-time apps to help mitigate impact of weather – Business Traveller

The new technology follows the carrier’s introduction of a new Electronic Aircraft Maintenance (eLog) system earlier this year – which replaces the old paper-based system and allows the immediate transfer of data from the aircraft to engineers, “meaning any required parts can be pre-ordered to help to resolve issues more quickly”. Commenting on the news René de Groot, chief operating officer at British Airways, said: “It’s exciting that we’ll be the first UK airline to combine the technology of both apps, which will allow us to make even better operational decisions in the moment using real-time data. “These applications represent a step-change in the quality of weather information we receive, and, in the future, will enable pilots to collaborate in real-time during a flight with operati...

Spying on Beavers From Space Could Help Save California

For the first time in four centuries, it’s good to be a beaver. Long persecuted for their pelts and reviled as pests, the dam-building rodents are today hailed by scientists as ecological saviors. Their ponds and wetlands store water in the face of drought, filter out pollutants, furnish habitat for endangered species, and fight wildfires. In California, Castor canadensis is so prized that the state recently committed millions to its restoration. While beavers’ benefits are indisputable, however, our knowledge remains riddled with gaps. We don’t know how many are out there, or which direction their populations are trending, or which watersheds most desperately need a beaver infusion. Few states have systematically surveyed them; moreover, many beaver ponds are tucked into remote streams fa...

Cottonwood Heights police officers collect money for victim who had child’s Christmas gifts stolen

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — The Christmas season can be considered the season of giving. It’s a phrase the Cottonwood Heights Police Department put into action after a burglary involving a child’s Christmas presents. The suspect or suspects had taken all of the gifts from inside a storage shed that a mother was planning on giving to her child just four days before Christmas. It happened on Thursday at an apartment complex at the intersection of Fort Union Blvd. and Union Park Avenue. “This woman did everything right. It’s not like she left the packages on the doorstep or unattended in a vehicle,” said Cottonwood Heights Police Chief Robby Russo. “She’s a hardworking person who did what she could for her family. She was able to buy these gifts and put them away and thoug...

‘Millionaire’s Tax’ Money Brings Extra Road and Sidewalk Money to Haverhill, Other Communities

Haverhill and area communities are receiving big boosts in state aid for roadway and transportation projects with additional money coming from last year’s voter-approved “Fair Share” amendment, commonly known as the “millionaire’s tax.” Haverhill, which already receives about $1.5 million from the state in road aid—known as “Chapter 90”—is set to receive another $769,765 from the $100 million statewide allocation. Gov. Maura Healey said Friday in a press release the state is not putting any strings on the money. “This funding is particularly impactful because we are empowering cities and towns to decide how to use it to address their unique needs. We are grateful to the legislature for making this funding available and look forward to seeing how the municipalities will use it to stre...

Financial Services Roundup: Market Talk

The latest Market Talks covering Financial Services. Exclusively on Dow Jones Newswires at 4:20 ET, 12:20 ET and 16:50 ET.0348 GMT – Australia’s comparatively drier weather should help protect insurer profitability due to lower catastrophe costs, say Morgan Stanley analysts in a note. With rainfall in Australian capital cities at 10-year lows in the year to date, IAG and Suncorp are being set up to over-earn in FY 2024, MS says. History shows that a 2%-3% change in domestic motor vehicle insurance loss ratios is possible from an increase or reduction in rainfall, although this will also depend on how well insurers manage pricing versus claims inflation, says MS. At the same time, a new government reinsurance pool should protect insurers from Cyclone Jasper, and help them come in below the...

National air show considering Wendover as future site, money needed for repairs

WENDOVER — For a place known for its past, Jim Petersen is excited for what may be Wendover’s future. “This would really be a big deal. It is huge,” he said. Petersen runs the Historic Wendover Airfield, where the crew of the Enola Gay trained during World War II that would drop the first atomic bomb on Japan. Funding to maintain the place, though, has always been tough. “There are a number of buildings on the base that admittedly some of them need some work,” said Petersen. Funding on its way However, a lot more money could soon be coming. “It is something that Tooele County is willing to do and it is something that the State is on board with, too,” said Petersen. Wendover, Utah, is one of six towns being considered as the new home for the National Championship ...
