Why Max Decided to Lose ‘HBO’ in Its Name

Warner Bros. Discovery sliced “HBO” from the name of its “HBO Max” streaming service earlier this year, sacrificing a seminal television brand name to convince consumers that it offers more than HBO’s style of programming. But the company is navigating a difficult time in streaming, as a growing mountain of competitors scramble for subscription fees and ad revenue. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Hollywood’s Box Office Recovery Needs Rewrite

2023 may be over, but Hollywood’s painful reckoning isn’t—especially at the box office. This year’s holiday season has largely been a lump of coal for the movie industry. Domestic box office receipts for the season starting the first week of November have barely crossed the $1 billion mark. That is actually below the same period in each of the past two years, which had been helped by the release of mega-blockbusters like “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” It is also less than half the $2.3 billion average for the holiday season in the prepandemic years of 2015 to 2019, according to Box Office Mojo. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. For Warner-Paramount, Streaming Consolidation Is Easier Said Than Done

Dec. 21, 2023 11:23 am ETIn the current Hollywood rumor mill, one thing remains certain: Streaming consolidation will be a lot easier said than done. Warner Bros. Discovery combining with Paramount Global is the latest pitch. The Wall Street Journal and other media outlets reported late Wednesday that Warner Chief Executive David Zaslav met with Paramount Chief Bob Bakish earlier this week to discuss a possible deal. No formal talks are yet under way, and the news comes just a couple of weeks after reports that Paramount’s controlling shareholder, Shari Redstone, was talking about a potential deal with an investor group led by Skydance Media. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Warner Gets Too Real About Advertising Meltdown

Even “Barbie” can only glam up her maker so much these days. Warner Bros. Discovery got a boost from the year’s biggest box-office hit during the third quarter. Its studio revenue grew 4% year over year, which is its first such gain in more than a year. But that was offset by continued weakness in advertising, which fell 12% year over year to just under $1.8 billion—a record low for the combined company’s reported results that go back to the beginning of 2021. Warner also lost about 1.4 million domestic subscribers to its streaming services that included the recently rebranded Max; analysts had been expecting a drop of only about 200,000 subscribers. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
