Israel Mourns and Prepares for War

Kfar Aza, IsraelBy the time I enter this community adjacent to the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army has removed most of the bodies. I am with a unit of the rescue organization Zaka, whose job is to retrieve parts missing from the bodies of the dead so that they can be made whole and given a proper Jewish burial. A Journalist Exposes the Philippines’ Extralegal Killings

Over the years, I’ve had the honor of reading and publishing reporters who are as resilient as they are intelligent: Katherine Boo, Jon Lee Anderson—I won’t go on because the list is as long as it is distinguished. It is a cliché to compare such writers to George Orwell or, more lately, with justice, Martha Gellhorn. But, if the shoe fits . . . Recently, a Filipina reporter named Patricia Evangelista came by the office, for an interview for The New Yorker Radio Hour. Our topic was her new book, “Some People Need Killing,” about the reign of Rodrigo Duterte. It is hardly written with Orwellian cool, but it stands next to “Homage to Catalonia.” Evangelista’s title comes from a vigilante, whose offhand comment to her exemplified the bloodiness of the Duterte Presidency and its extralegal drug...

`The Laramie Project’ stages a special reading in Wyoming on the 25th anniversary of Shepard murder

NEW YORK -- It has been 25 years since the body of Matthew Shepard was discovered in Laramie, Wyoming. The gay college student had been tied to a fence post, tortured and left to die.The murder drew national attention to violence against gay people, and attracted the interest of theater director Moisés Kaufman, who turned the horror into art with “The Laramie Project.”This 25th anniversary has triggered deep sadness for Kaufman, founder and artistic director of the New York-based Tectonic Theater Project. He wonders about all the things Shepard could have become.“Every year around this time, it’s painful to remember, but this one has hit particularly hard,” Kaufman tells the AP. After Shepard's 1998 killing, Kaufman and members of Tectonic traveled to Laramie and wrote the play based on m...

Safe Haven: Attack on Israel likely to boost appeal of gold, safe-haven assets

NEW YORK: The violence in Israel will likely prompt a move into safe-haven assets as investors closely watch events in the Middle East to gauge geopolitical risk to markets. Gunmen from the Palestinian group Hamas entered Israel in an unprecedented attack on Saturday. Western countries, led by the United States, denounced the attack and pledged support for Israel. Rising geopolitical risk could see buying in assets like gold and the dollar, and potentially boost demand for US Treasuries, which have been sold off aggressively, analysts said. "This is a good example of why people need gold in their portfolios. It is a perfect hedge against international turmoil," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities, who predicted that the dollar would also benefit. "Any...

Haitian students play drums and strum guitars to escape hunger and gang violence

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Woodberson Seïde held his stepsister's hand as they walked through Haiti 's capital on their way to an afterschool music program. They avoided cars, motorcycles, and territory controlled by the gangs whose predation prompted this week's U.N. Security Council vote for the deployment of a multinational armed force. Once he arrived at the school that hosts the program, 11-year-old Woodberson didn't think much about how he sometimes eats once a day. His family sleeps on the floor of a church, something they've done since losing their home to gangs. The boy was neatly dressed and ready to play drums. Across Port-au-Prince, hundreds of children like Woodberson are playing percussion, piano and bass guitar to drown out the violence and hunger around them.“When I play drum...
