Erdogan’s Turkey Doesn’t Belong in the EU

The European Commission on Nov. 8 issued its annual report on states wanting to join the European Union. The report criticizes the regime of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for disregarding human rights, increasing ties with Vladimir Putin’s Russia and restricting freedom of expression. The commission takes particular aim at Turkey’s stance on Israel: “Its rhetoric” in support of Hamas “is in complete disagreement with the EU approach.”The EU, like the U.S., has long held delusions about Mr. Erdogan’s views and intentions. Yet for anyone paying attention, his latest inflammatory comments—that “Hamas is not a terrorist organization but a liberation group”—are no surprise. Throughout his 20-year tenure as leader of Turkey, he has spread radical Islam, crushed political opposition and...

What Kind of Trouble Is Eric Adams In?

Because public attention is a finite resource, political crises have a way of obscuring and supplanting one another. On the morning of November 2nd, New York City’s mayor, Eric Adams, flew to Washington, D.C., for a full day of meetings about New York’s migrant crisis. “We are headed to D.C. to meet with our congressional delegation and the White House to address this real issue,” Adams said in a video posted on his X account at 7:41 A.M. “We’ll keep you updated as the day goes on.”For more than a year, without much success, Adams had been calling on the federal government to defray the astronomical costs of housing tens of thousands of immigrants in city-run shelters. He had gone as far as suggesting that without federal help the migrant crisis would “destroy” New York. Though the disput...

Oil Exports: Turkey has yet to notify Iraq on oil pipeline, Baghdad says

BASRA: Iraq has not received formal notification from Turkey on whether the oil exports pipeline is ready to begin operations, two senior Iraqi oil officials said on Sunday. The officials spoke following Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar's comments last Monday when he said the oil pipeline bringing crude from Iraq was ready. "We as an oil ministry need to be informed officially by the Turkish side about the recent developments on the pipeline status. We heard about it in media only," said a senior oil ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity. A second senior energy adviser told Reuters Iraq was also waiting for talks on "lingering financial and technical issues". Turkey halted flows through Iraq's northern oil export route after an arbitration ruling in March by th...
