US to grant Samsung up to $6.4 billion for chip plants

WASHINGTON: The United States on Monday announced grants of up to $6.4 billion to South Korean semiconductor giant Samsung to produce cutting-edge chips in Texas. The award is the latest from the US government as it looks to revive the country's chip manufacturing industry, especially high-end semiconductors.President Joe Biden's administration has previously approved billions in grants to US titan Intel and Taiwan's TSMC, as it tries to avoid the prospect of shortages of semiconductors -- the lifeblood of the modern global economy."The U.S. Department of Commerce and Samsung Electronics (Samsung) have signed a non-binding preliminary memorandum of terms (PMT) to provide up to $6.4 billion in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act," said a statement published by the Department of C...

President Biden’s to semiconductor manufacturers. The White House Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is receiving $6.6 billion in grants to build three fabrication plants, otherwise called fabs, in the region of Phoenix, Arizona. This is in addition to around $5 billion in government loans. As part of this deal, TSMC agreed to expand its planned investment in Arizona by $25 billion, to $65 billion. The company it is building in the state, with a third promised by 2030. The White House says this represents the largest foreign direct investment in Arizona’s history, with expectations to bring 6,000 high-wage tech jobs and 20,000 construction jobs to the state. One nifty aspect of these factories is that they’ll allow TSMC to complete every aspect of the chip-making process o...

On Thursday it reported an 11% year-on-year decline in revenue for the quarter ended in September. Net profit fell 25%. But both came out ahead of analysts’ forecasts on S&P Global Market Intelligence. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8
