Trump holds his last rally before his hush money trial

SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Former President Donald Trump on Saturday lit into New York prosecutors and the criminal hush money case they brought against him during his last rally before what he called a “communist show trial” begins Monday.“I will be forced to sit fully gagged. I’m not allowed to talk. They want to take away my constitutional right to talk,” said Trump, who has been barred from publicly discussing potential witnesses and jurors but not the judge or prosecutors. “I’m proud to do it for you,” Trump told a crowd in northeast Pennsylvania. “Have a good time watching.”Trump spoke as Israel was fighting off a retaliatory drone attack from Iran that threatened to tip into a regional war in the Middle East. After a short mention of the atta...

Trump Tests Limits Of Gag Order With Post Insulting 2 Likely Witnesses In Criminal Trial

NEW YORK (AP) — Days after a New York judge expanded a gag order on Donald Trump to curtail “inflammatory” speech, the former president tested its limits by disparaging two key witnesses in his upcoming criminal hush money trial as liars. In a post on his Truth Social platform Wednesday, Trump called his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, and the adult film actor Stormy Daniels “two sleaze bags who have, with their lies and misrepresentations, cost our Country dearly!”In an order first made in March, and then revised on April 1, Judge Juan Merchan barred Trump from making public statements about probable trial witnesses “concerning their potential participation in the investigation or in this criminal proceeding.”Merchan’s order didn’t give specific examples of what types of statements about wi...

Tariffs and the Common Man

With Donald Trump leading the 2024 polls while calling for a 10% universal tariff, the new GOP protectionists are trying to sell this idea as a boon for the working class. The evidence exposes this folly: Trade wars invite painful retaliation, prop up politically favored industries at the expense of others, and raise prices on consumers like an invisible tax. They hurt the average worker. The economic literature on this point is voluminous. To pick one place to start, here was the conclusion of a study of Mr. Trump’s last trade wars, written in 2019 by two Federal Reserve economists: “We find that U.S. manufacturing industries more exposed to tariff increases experience relative reductions in employment as a positive effect from import protection is offset by larger negative effects from r...

Worldwide, 2024 Elections Promise a Whirlwind

Dec. 28, 2023 12:49 pm ETIt’s (almost) election year, baby! Every year is important in its way, and most elections matter to someone. Even so, 2024 promises to be unusually electorally exciting due to the sheer amount of voting across the democratic world—and over what issues. What seems likely to be an awful U.S. presidential election in November is only part of the story. Hyperventilation about Donald Trump’s supposedly authoritarian instincts and well-founded concerns over Biden family corruption will motivate the major parties’ bases. But don’t lose sight of the global significance of this contest, given the security and economic threats and challenges confronting the winner. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Trump Ballot Ban Appealed To U.S. Supreme Court By Colorado Republican Party

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Republican Party on Wednesday appealed that state’s supreme court decision that found former President Donald Trump is ineligible for the presidency, the potential first step to a showdown at the nation’s highest court over the meaning of a 155-year-old constitutional provision that bans from office those who “engaged in insurrection.”The first impact of the appeal is to extend the stay of the 4-3 ruling from Colorado’s highest court, which put its decision on pause until Jan. 4, the day before the state’s primary ballots are due at the printer, or until an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court is finished. Trump himself has said he still plans to appeal the ruling to the nation’s highest court as well. The U.S. Supreme Court has never ruled on Section 3 of the 14th A...

What Information About Trump Do Voters Deserve?

The wiser course advised in “Jack Smith and the Supreme Court” (Review & Outlook, Dec. 16) would be to “let the voters decide” after considering “the facts of what the special counsel found.” But the question arises as to what information the voters should have when they make their fateful decision—the singular perspective of the special counsel or the facts as presented and adjudicated in a court of law, and upon which any subsequent determination of innocence or guilt will be based?Robert BurackCopyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Insurrection Clause Is Self-Executing Until Congress Says Otherwise

In “Trump vs. the Banana Republic of Colorado” (op-ed, Dec. 21), Karl Rove uses the example of Lucius Q.C. Lamar, a man presumably disqualified from holding office by the 14th Amendment due to his service in the Confederacy. Mr. Rove points out, however, that Lamar was able to serve across the three branches of government, including on the Supreme Court, despite the 14th Amendment bar. If that were all there is to Justice Lamar’s story, it would be a persuasive point. But Mr. Rove left out important parts of the story. The 14th Amendment bars from public office those who engage in insurrection or rebellion, but it also says Congress can “remove such disability.” In 1872 Congress passed the Amnesty Act, and did just that for most Southerners. There was an important exception, however. Membe...
