When Preachers Were Rock Stars

On an elegant residential block in Brooklyn Heights stands what once may have been the most famous church in America. Plymouth Church, on Orange Street, was founded in 1847 with just twenty-one members. The New York businessmen who established the church, practicing Congregationalists, wanted it to grow, so they offered the job of minister to Henry Ward Beecher, whose preaching prowess had made Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis one of the largest congregations in that city. Beecher accepted the offer. He would preach at Plymouth Church for the next forty years, eventually to full houses of two thousand worshippers of the Christian God.In nineteenth-century America, sermons were a widely diffused entertainment medium. People bought print collections of sermons, but the sermon itse...

In death, 3 decades after his trial verdict, OJ Simpson still reflects America’s racial divides

For many people old enough to remember O.J. Simpson’s murder trial, his 1995 exoneration was a defining moment in their understanding of race, policing and justice. Nearly three decades later, it still reflects the different realities of white and Black Americans. Some people recall watching their Black co-workers and classmates erupting in jubilation at perceived retribution over institutional racism. Others remember their white counterparts shocked over what many felt was overwhelming evidence of guilt. Both reactions reflected different experiences with a criminal justice system that continues to disproportionately punish Black Americans.Simpson, who died Wednesday, remains a symbol of racial divisions in American society because he is a reminder of how deeply the inequities are felt, e...

He was 76. The family announced on Simpson's official X account that he died Wednesday of prostate cancer. He died in Las Vegas, officials there said Thursday.Simpson earned fame, fortune and adulation through and show business, but his legacy was forever changed by the June 1994 knife slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman in Los Angeles. He was later found liable for the deaths in a separate civil case, and then served nine years in prison on unrelated charges.Goldman’s father, Fred, and his sister, Kim, released ...

Air New Zealand trials removal of single-use cups inflight – Business Traveller

Air New Zealand has carried out a trial of “single-use cup free flights”, as it explores how to reduce the millions of cups used on its aircraft each year. The carrier trialled the initiative on six domestic flights last week, with customers being encouraged to bring reusable cups with them, or being provided with one for use during onboard service. ANZ said that “knowledge gained from customer feedback, operational logistics, and impact will help to determine the viability of implementing the initiative in the long term”. The airline recently removed all single-use cups from its domestic airport lounges – equating to the saving of around one million single-use cups per year – but admitted that doing the same inflight “is a much greater challenge”. Back in 2019 the carrier trialled an ed...

Prince Harry wins phone hacking lawsuit against British tabloid publisher, awarded 140,000 pounds

LONDON -- LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry won his phone hacking lawsuit Friday against the publisher of the Daily Mirror and was awarded over 140,000 pounds ($180,000) in the first of his several lawsuits against British tabloids to go to trial.Justice Timothy Fancourt in the High Court found phone hacking was “widespread and habitual” at Mirror Group Newspapers over many years and private investigators “were an integral part of the system” to gather information unlawfully. He said executives at the papers were aware of the practice and covered it up. Fancourt said he awarded the Duke of Sussex damages for 15 of the 33 newspaper articles in question at trial that were the result of unlawful information gathering and resulted in the misuse of Harry's private information.“Today is a great day fo...

Shakira to appear in Barcelona court on the first day of her tax fraud trial in Spain

BARCELONA, Spain -- Global pop star Shakira has been summoned Monday to a Barcelona courthouse to attend the first day of her trial for allegedly defrauding Spanish tax officials of millions of euros.Shakira, 46, faces six counts of failing to pay the Spanish government 14.5 million euros (about $15.8 million) in taxes between 2012 and 2014. Ivanka Trump’s Tricky Comeback Tour

Poor Ivanka! Just when she thought she was out, they pulled her back in. I am referring, of course, to her recent appearance at the civil fraud trial of her father, Donald Trump, which has been ongoing in Manhattan for six weeks. The trial stems from the New York attorney general Letitia James’s contention that the former President—along with his two eldest sons, and other Trump Organization executives—fraudulently inflated his net worth, and the value of his real-estate assets on financial documents, which helped them secure favorable loans for the company.Ivanka narrowly wriggled out of being a defendant herself: she stopped working for the Trump Organization, where she had been an executive vice-president, in 2017—which, as luck would have it, places her outside the statute of limitati...
