Google to pay $700 million to U.S. states for stifling competition against Android app store

Google has agreed to pay $700 million and make several other concessions to settle allegations that it had been stifling competition against its Android app store — the same issue that went to trial in another case that could result in even bigger changes. Although Google struck the deal with state attorneys general in September, the settlement's terms weren't revealed until late Monday in documents filed in San Francisco federal court. The disclosure came a week after a federal court jury rebuked Google for deploying anticompetitive tactics in its Play Store for Android apps. The settlement with the states includes $630 million to compensate U.S. consumers funneled into a payment processing system that state attorneys general alleged drove up the prices for digital transactions within app...

Defense lawyers in Jam Master Jay murder trial declare two juries are too much in trial of accused killers

Defense attorneys in next year’s long-awaited Jam Master Jay murder trial say two juries are one too many. A Brooklyn Federal Court filing Friday by lawyers for defendant Jay Bryant challenged a prosecution motion to simultaneously try all three accused suspects in the high-profile case, with one set of jurors hearing the case against their client while a second separate panel determines the fate of co-defendants Ronald “Tinard” Washington and Karl Jordan Jr. “The government simply can’t accept that it must try Mr. Bryant separately and instead filed the instant motion,” the defense argued. “… It should be denied because the likelihood of a mistrial necessitating a retrial combined with the prejudice to Mr. Bryant resulting from a two-jury trial substantially outweighs any potential savin...

Satya Nadella: Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testifies at once-in-a-generation US Google antitrust trial

WASHINGTON: The US Justice Department's once-in-a-generation antitrust fight with Alphabet's Google gets some star power on Monday when Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella takes the witness stand. The government is likely to ask Nadella about the obstacles posed by Google's dominance as Microsoft sought to grow Edge and Bing, its browser and search engine. The government has argued that Google, worth more than $1 trillion with some 90% of the search market, illegally paid $10 billion annually to smartphone makers like Apple and wireless carriers like AT&T and others to be the default search engine on their devices. The clout in search makes Google a heavy hitter in the lucrative advertising market, boosting its profits. Google has sought to show that the quality of its products a...
