The new technology follows the carrier’s introduction of a new Electronic Aircraft Maintenance (eLog) system earlier this year – which replaces the old paper-based system and allows the immediate transfer of data from the aircraft to engineers, “meaning any required parts can be pre-ordered to help to resolve issues more quickly”. Commenting on the news René de Groot, chief operating officer at British Airways, said: “It’s exciting that we’ll be the first UK airline to combine the technology of both apps, which will allow us to make even better operational decisions in the moment using real-time data. “These applications represent a step-change in the quality of weather information we receive, and, in the future, will enable pilots to collaborate in real-time during a flight with operati...

Heathrow urges government to drop ETA scheme for transit passengers – Business Traveller

Heathrow Airport says the recently introduced Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme is impacting transit figures, and is urging the government to take action “to level the playing field”. The phased roll out of the ETA scheme was launched in November for Qatari citizens, requiring travellers to apply for the digital documentation ahead of travel and pay a £10 fee. The requirement applies to passengers either travelling to or transiting through the UK. Heathrow said that in the first four months of the scheme being in place it had seen 19,000 fewer transit passengers from Qatar, “with the transfer route recording its lowest monthly proportions for over ten years each month since the implementation of ETAs”. London City became the first major airport in the UK to fully deploy next generation CT security scanners in April 2023, allowing passengers to pass through security without removing laptops and liquids from their hand luggage. Passengers flying from London City Airport are also no longer restricted by the 100ml liquid rule, and can take through bottles of up to two litres. In December 2022 the DfT announced what it called an end to the “tiny toiletries” rule by 2024, with all major airports required to replace existing 2D screening technology with more advanced CT security scanners by June of this year. Nonetheless, not all airports are introducing new security ...
