Tuberville’s Hard Beltway Education – WSJ

The Senate on Tuesday approved 425 U.S. military promotions, which usually wouldn’t attract much attention. But Republican Tommy Tuberville had for months held these officers as hostages in a fight with the Biden Pentagon over abortion. Give the Alabama Senator credit for relenting. Sen. Tuberville announced he’d release most of his holds, with the exception of a handful of four-star officers. Senate Democrats had been floating a procedural resolution to duck Sen. Tuberville’s blockade, a risky precedent that could cramp every Senator’s prerogatives to review nominees. That was an institutional outcome worth avoiding.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Tommy Tuberville Backs Down in Fight Over Military Promotions

WASHINGTON—Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville ended his monthslong hold on nearly all military promotions, saying he would allow hundreds of officers to move forward, while still demanding individual votes for about a dozen four-star generals and admirals. “I’m not going to hold the promotions of these people any longer. We just released them, everybody,” Tuberville told reporters Tuesday. “I think about 440 of them, everybody but 10 or 11, four stars.”Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. GOP Senators Blast Tommy Tuberville Over Blockade On Military Promotions

WASHINGTON ― Republican frustration with Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s (R-Ala.) monthslong hold on over 300 military nominees boiled over on Wednesday when several of his GOP colleagues railed against his tactics. In an extraordinary debate on the Senate floor, Republican senators blasted Tuberville’s hold and sought to approve via voice vote promotions of uncontroversial senior military officials stalled because of his objection to the Pentagon’s policy on travel for abortion care that was put in place after the reversal of Roe v. Wade last year. Tuberville was unmoved and objected to each one.“I will keep my hold in place until the Pentagon follows the law or the Democrats change the law,” he said of the travel policy.Republicans stood by Tuberville’s hold for months, trying to craft a comprom...

Tim Scott: ‘Not Necessarily A Bad Thing’ To Block Military Nominees

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) said Thursday that an ongoing GOP blockade of hundreds of President Joe Biden’s military nominees may actually be a good thing for America since Biden has been trying to bring more diversity into the nation’s military. In an interview with conservative radio show host Hugh Hewitt, Scott, who is running for president, was asked if he supports Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) in blocking more than 300 military nominations in protest of the Pentagon’s policy on providing abortion-related travel. Tuberville has been leaning on Senate procedural rules since February to derail their confirmations.Scott replied that it may actually be a good thing that Tuberville is singlehandedly preventing hundreds of U.S. military posts from being filled.“Under President Biden, holding up...

Chuck Schumer Blinks Amid GOP Blockade Of Military Nominations

WASHINGTON ― Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday moved forward with confirming three senior military nominees who were blocked by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) amid his monthslong hold on more than 300 military nominations, a small break in the logjam that has frustrated senior Pentagon officials and lawmakers in both parties. The three officials set to be confirmed are Gen. Eric Smith for Marine Corps commandant, Randy George for chief of staff of the Army, and C.Q. Brown for chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Hundreds of other lower-ranking military officials are still waiting for Senate approval as Tuberville singlehandedly blocks them over his objections to the Pentagon’s policy on travel for abortion care.In remarks on the Senate floor, Schumer said it’s lo...

Air Force Secretary Scorches Tommy Tuberville Over Military Promotion Blockade

Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall went after Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) for his blockade of hundreds of military promotions.“Sen. Tuberville has no experience in the military. It’s his first time in public service and I don’t think he appreciates how much of an impact this is having and how negative an impact it is for the military,” Kendall told CNN’s Jim Acosta on Saturday.Kendall’s remarks arrive as the Alabama senator and ex-college football coach continues to keep promotions on hold to protest the Pentagon’s policy on providing service members with paid leave and covering travel costs to get an abortion in another state. Kendall, along with Army Secretary Christine Wormuth and Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro, recently wrote a Washington Post opinion piece where they referred to ac...
