Gavin Creel’s New Musical Is A Riveting Look At Art, Sex And Queer Identity

After 22 years as one of Broadway’s most prolific leading men, Gavin Creel is ready to turn the spotlight inward. The Tony-winning actor and singer currently stars in “Walk on Through: Confessions of a Museum Novice,” which opened Dec. 4 at New York’s MCC Theater. Commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and directed by Linda Goodrich, the musical consists of 17 pop-rock songs, all of which Creel wrote after spending time at the Met ― which he’d avoided visiting since moving to New York in 1998 ― four years ago.Over the course of 100 minutes, Creel takes in some of the Met’s best-known works, alluding to paintings by Edward Hopper and Jackson Pollock along the way. But an art history lecture this is not, as Creel’s aesthetic observations soon give way to deeper revelations about his ...

‘Past Lives,’ wins at Gotham Awards, while De Niro says speech was edited

NEW YORK -- Celine Song’s wistful romance “Past Lives” earned top honors at the Gotham Awards on Monday evening at an award-season kickoff where the night's biggest drama came in a political speech by Robert De Niro that the actor claimed had been edited without his permission. “Past Lives,” a breakout at the Sundance Film Festival in January and an arthouse hit in June for A24, may be poised to be an Oscar sleeper this year after winning best feature film at the Gothams. Affection is strong for Song’s directorial debut, starring Greta Lee as a woman born in Seoul who, after marrying an American (John Magaro), reconnects with a childhood friend from South Korea (Teo Yoo).“This is the first film I've ever made and a very personal film about an extraordinary feeling I had in an ordinary bar...

America’s Nonprofit Theaters Are Finding Ways to Thrive

By Rachel ShteirNov. 22, 2023 10:00 am ETListen to article(3 minutes)“The Fabulous Invalid” is the title of a 1938 George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart comedy about a theater’s struggles to survive. The phrase, which outlasted the show, refers to the resilience of theater in the face of insane odds. In the past six months, it has been an apt image for the demise of not-for-profit companies across America. Since the pandemic ended, dozens of theaters across the country have closed; many others have laid off staff or cut down their seasons. Longtime artistic leaders left their jobs. Data collected by Theater Communications Group shows that 60% of the country’s nonprofit theaters are predicting deficits this year, compared with 10% in 2021.The reasons for the crisis are numerous: competition for ...

Native American storytellers enjoying a rare spotlight, a moment they hope can be more than that

NEW YORK -- The financial crisis of 2008 hit Mary Kathryn Nagle differently. As a playwright and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, she saw parallels to events that negatively impacted Indigenous people centuries ago.Her play “Manahatta” juxtaposes the recent mortgage meltdown when thousands lost their homes to predatory lenders with the shady 17th-century Dutch who swindled and violently pushed Native Americans off their ancestral lands.“A lot of times history does repeat itself," Nagle says. “I’m really interested in the ways in which we can connect to our past, carry it with us, learn from it, and maybe change outcomes so that we’re not just doomed to repeat the past in the present.”Nagle's 2018 play has landed in New York City at the prestigious Public Theater this winter and it's just...

‘Florencia en el Amazonas’ Review: Exuberant Spanish Singing at the Metropolitan Opera

New YorkThe Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s “Florencia en el Amazonas,” which had its Metropolitan Opera premiere on Thursday, is well-traveled; it has had several productions and been seen in numerous opera houses since its 1996 world premiere at the Houston Grand Opera. There are reasons for its popularity—lush orchestration, ear-pleasing vocal lines, a romantic story—and as one of very few operas in Spanish, it’s a good choice for companies eager to attract Spanish-speaking audiences. It is the Met’s first opera by a Latin American composer and only its third Spanish-language offering (the previous ones were in 1916 and 1926). The resurrected New York City Opera imported a production from Nashville to give the opera its New York premiere in 2016. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company...
