Facing Housing Shortages, Cities Try Cramming More Units on Lots

The Austin duplex Jane Kurzawa Cravey and her then-husband moved into in 1979 was rundown, but the couple was able to use rental income from the second unit to pay off most of the mortgage and make improvements. As her property taxes climbed over the years, Cravey wanted to add a third unit as a way to pay off taxes and debts. She couldn’t make it work under the city’s regulations—until this year when Austin, Texas, changed its land development code to allow for up to three units on single-family lots. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Tech Hubs Are Losing the Talent War to Everywhere Else

Silicon Valley and other tech hubs are losing the tech talent war.Metro areas that consistently attracted huge numbers of tech workers have hit a turning point, according to fresh data from labor-market analytics firm Lightcast, crunched by D.C. think tank Brookings. The share of the nation’s tech workers who work in places such as Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Boston, New York, Los Angeles and the greater Washington, D.C. area is actually shrinking. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. The Texas Immigration Law Gambit

Frustrated by the Biden Administration’s immigration failures, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott this week signed a bill making it a state crime for migrants to cross the southern border illegally. The flood of migrants is a major state problem, but the only effective solution lies in Congress. The Texas law makes it a misdemeanor to cross the border illegally, punishable by up to six months in jail. Foreign migrants who attempt to enter Texas after being deported could be charged with a felony. A federal grant of asylum, lawful presence, or protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals would be an “affirmative defense” from prosecution.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. What’s New at Texas Hill Country Hotels

Driving west out of Austin toward Fredericksburg, the road narrows to one-lane blacktop, and the edges of the city’s suburbs gradually give way to a different kind of Texas, one of ranches, old wooden churches, farm stands and wineries. This is the Texas Hill Country, a 31,000-square-mile area of rocky karst hills considered the threshold between the Southeast and the Southwest. As the center of the state’s wine tourism, and with a more temperate climate than the nearby cities, the region has lured visitors for generations, whether for the hiking or the tempranillo wine or to just get away from it all.Figuring out where exactly the Texas Hill Country begins and ends is a task best left to local songwriting legends like Willie Nelson and Lucinda Williams, but over a recent weekend, with Ms....

Texas Governor Signs Bill That Lets Police Arrest Migrants Who Enter The US Illegally

Testing the limits of how far Texas can go to keep migrants out of the U.S., Republican Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday signed into law sweeping new powers that allow police to arrest migrants who cross the border illegally and give local judges authority to order them to leave the country.Opponents have called the measure the most dramatic attempt by a state to police immigration since a 2010 Arizona law — denounced by critics as the “Show Me Your Papers” bill — that was largely struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. Texas’ law is also likely to face swift legal challenges.Immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility. But Texas Republicans have increasingly blurred those boundaries under President Joe Biden, saying his administration isn’t doing enough to stop people from entering the ...

Creditors Cite Poll to Question Judge’s Impartiality in Fee Dispute

Dec. 15, 2023 5:48 pm ET|WSJ ProCreditors of 4E Brands say findings of a survey they commissioned support their case for Judge Marvin Isgur of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston to recuse himself from weighing in on a dispute over legal fees the maker of hand sanitizer paid its law firm.  The creditors are seeking the return to 4E Brands of fees it paid to the Jackson Walker law firm. The creditors say Isgur shouldn’t rule on their request because of his friendship and professional relationship of more than two decades with David R. Jones, a former bankruptcy judge who had been handling the company’s chapter 11 case.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8
