Kelly Slater’s long career appears to be ending after the 52-year-old – widely acknowledged as the greatest surfer – missed the World Surf League’s mid-season cut at Margaret River. Missing the cut means he has not qualified for the rest of the 2024 Championship Tour, as well as the start of next year's. The 11-time WSL champion was holding back tears as he said: "Everything comes to an end. If you don't adapt, you don't survive."

Grand Strand surf competition honors former lifeguard, raises money for higher education

SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - An annual surf competition made some big waves in the Grand Strand this weekend.The 23rd annual Guy Daniels Memorial Surf Off had surfers like Olen Powalie catching waves for a cause.“Surfing is just a lot more fun when everyone else is having fun and the contest kind of does that for you,” said Powalie.Powalie said this year was his tenth competition in honor of Daniels, a former Surfside Beach surfer and lifeguard.“Just doing it for him and having a good time. Spreading the love of surfing,” he said.The competition brings together hundreds of folks along the Grand Strand honoring Daniels as well as teaching youth the importance of maintaining a clean beach.Family and friends said Daniels passed away from a heart attack while jogging on the beach in college in...

So I returned to the dock for round two of pumping. After a few minutes more of fiddling with the gauge, it finally registered that the board was pumped to only 10 psi, way too low. When it hit 15 psi, I paddled back out, and the difference was night and day: The wobble was gone and the board felt solid underfoot. On flat water, tracking was impressive, and I tried a few fancy draw strokes, which felt light and natural, especially with the height-adjustable carbon paddle. When I took the SUP out again that afternoon in windy chop, it was harder to manage, especially when bigger boats and their trailing wakes rolled through.
