A Tale of Two Pharmas: Can Obesity Firms Continue Their Outperformance in 2024?

In pharma, you can take a larger slice of the healthcare pie than your peers, but you are still constrained by the size of the pie. No matter how good your cancer or diabetes drug is, healthcare systems will still have to keep paying for heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis treatments too. That, in a nutshell, is why the divergence of obesity-diabetes companies from the rest of the industry in recent years can’t go on forever. In 2023, Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk have risen more than 50% each, to become the two largest pharma companies by market capitalization, with their combined value now hovering around $1 trillion. By comparison, the rest of the industry badly underperformed the market, with the NYSE Arca Pharmaceutical Index rising a measly 4% compared with 24% for the S&P 500.  ...

Israel Intensifies Offensive in Gaza Refugee Camps

Listen to article(2 minutes)TEL AVIV—Israeli forces intensified their ground offensive in refugee camps in the central Gaza Strip, as fighting continued to drive Palestinian civilians into shrinking and overcrowded areas in search of safety.Since the launch of its military operation in October, Israel has struck several refugee camps in Gaza as it seeks to eradicate Hamas, the U.S.-designated terrorist group that launched a bloody attack on Israel on Oct. 7. On Tuesday, Israel’s top general, Herzi Halevi, said “the war will continue for many more months,” given the complexity of uprooting Hamas.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. China Imposes Sanctions on U.S. Data Firm

Updated Dec. 26, 2023 9:28 pm ETChina’s government hit back at U.S. criticism of its human-rights record on Tuesday by imposing sanctions on a Los Angeles firm and two analysts involved in scouring the country’s supply chain for abuses.Beijing said the actions under its Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law will be applied to Kharon, a research and data analytics firm, in response to its work monitoring Xinjiang, a far western region of China where the U.S. government, Western media and independent researchers have documented human-rights abuses against ethnic minorities, including primarily Muslim Uyghurs.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Verano Executive Bullish on the Future of the U.S. Cannabis Industry

The past year was pivotal for the legal cannabis industry’s acceptance as a mainstream business in the U.S. The Department of Health and Human Services in August recommended to the Drug Enforcement Administration that marijuana be reclassified to a less restrictive Schedule III substance from a Schedule I substance. The Senate Banking Committee, meanwhile, in September approved the Secure and Fair Enforcement Regulation Banking Act, which would give cannabis businesses greater access to banking services, and it now awaits a vote on the Senate floor. And in November, Ohio became the latest state to legalize adult recreational marijuana use, bringing the total number of U.S. states that permit recreational cannabis use to 24. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Anti-Zionism Is Deadlier Than Antisemitism

Some say that anti-Zionism isn’t tantamount to antisemitism. If so, it’s worse. Antisemitism always stings, but in the West today, it usually doesn’t wound. The same can’t be said of anti-Zionism.Antisemitism in America has consisted mostly of small things: exclusion from country clubs, restrictive covenants on housing, quotas in college admissions, casual slights and insults. Since World War II, the same has been true, if a little worse, in the rest of the West. America and Europe have seen horrible moments of violence, such as at the Tree of Life synagogue in 2018 or the Toulouse shootings in France in 2012, as well as instances of intimidation, vandalism and assault. But these have mostly been isolated incidents.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cb...

The Great Blue to Red State Migration Continues

The migrant border mess is benefiting progressive states like New York, California and Illinois in one respect: It’s offsetting some of their population loss from droves of taxpayers fleeing to lower-cost and low-tax states. That’s one lesson from new Census Bureau state population data released this week. The U.S. population increased by 1.6 million between July 2022 and July 2023, with states in the South accounting for about 1.4 million of the growth. Leading the boom were Texas (473,453), Florida (365,205), Georgia (116,077), South Carolina (90,600) and Tennessee (77,512). Driving their growth was migration from other states.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Why a Border Deal Might Not Fix the Border

WASHINGTON—The immigration-policy proposals that Republicans and Democrats have haggled over for weeks have one big catch—they may not do much to stem the flow of migrants at the border.Arrests of migrants surged recently to above 10,000 a day along the Southwest border, overwhelming agents and prompting the unusual move of closing some bridges and ports. President Biden dispatched Secretary of State Antony Blinken and top Homeland Security officials to Mexico to discuss how to stem the flow, while House Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) demanded the White House take executive action to turn back migrants.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
