Nikki Haley’s Civil War Battlefield

Nikki Haley made a mess. Part of the job of running for president is being able to think on your feet and answer weird questions that come out of the blue. Enemies are always looking to trip you up. Voters want to see how you handle yourself under fire. It’s a necessary skill to answer with aplomb.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Civil War Gaffe Undercuts Nikki Haley’s 2024 Pitch

Updated Dec. 29, 2023 10:24 am ETRepublican Nikki Haley, who until this week had run a disciplined and largely error-free presidential campaign, has been forced into an uncomfortable and unexpected new chore: doing cleanup on a blunder related to the Civil War and slavery. The former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador was forced into defensive mode after she omitted slavery from an answer she gave at a New Hampshire campaign event where she was asked what prompted the Civil War. Her long-winded response avoided giving the answer to a basic question most learned in grade school, teeing up a barrage of criticism from political foes.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Tort Law vs. the Anti-Israel Protesters

Normally we wouldn’t wish trial lawyers on our worst enemy. But as anti-Israel demonstrations grow increasingly lawless, the plaintiffs bar could help. Why not hit protesters who break the law and keep Americans from getting to their destination with a tort liability suit for false imprisonment? On Wednesday anti-Israel protesters blocked access to JFK and LAX airports in New York and Los Angeles, respectively. The laws of New York and California, like most states, recognize the tort. While there is no precedent applying this tort to road-blocking protesters, it fits the offense. The purpose of these demonstrations is to block the road to keep people from getting to the airport—deliberately and against their will.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Updated Dec. 28, 2023 7:38 pm ETRepublican presidential candidate Nikki Haley said Thursday the Civil War was caused by a fight over slavery as she tried to tamp down a political uproar hours after she failed to mention it when asked about the conflict’s origins.“Of course the Civil War was about slavery, we know that, that’s the easy part of it,” she said on a Pulse of NH radio show. “I’m from the South. Of course you know it’s about slavery.”Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

‘Extended Family’ Review: A Subversive Split From Sitcom Tropes

A network situation comedy that is genuinely funny doesn’t come along every weeknight at 8:30, or most weeknights at 8:30, and even if the producers passed on the most obvious title—“Post-Modern Family”—their new “Extended Family” has legs. Jokes. Jon Cryer’s scrupulous comedic timing. And a premise that even 20 years ago would have had the old Legion of Decency writhing on the floor: happy divorce.Does it help that it isn’t so happy? The creation of writer-actor-producer Mike O’Malley starring Mr. Cryer and Abigail Spencer, “Extended Family” is based on two pillars of classical sitcom philosophy—people’s intentions are good and they are not as smart as they think. As we are told by Jim and Julia—directly to the camera, which is how much information is exchanged—their marriage had basical...
