Charter Schools Keep Winning Students From Union Schools

This has been the year for school choice—from vouchers, to homeschooling, to pod schools with parents who use education savings accounts. The winners include charter schools, as union-run K-12 schools lost hundreds of thousands of students during Covid-19 who haven’t returned.Charter enrollment is up 9% since 2019, while the number of students in district schools is down 3.5%, according to a new study from the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. “Families have discovered choice,” the report says, “and they like it.”Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Harvard Is Big Business at Its Worst

Dec. 17, 2023 11:38 am ETMost Americans probably heard of the Harvard Corp. for the first time last week, when it issued a supercilious statement affirming its support for Harvard President Claudine Gay. The corporation, Harvard’s governing body, wrote that Ms. Gay “is the right leader to help our community heal and to address the very serious societal issues we are facing.”The statement was effectively a middle finger to alumni such as hedge-fund titan Bill Ackman, who had demanded Ms. Gay be canned after she equivocated before Congress over whether calling for the genocide of Jews violated Harvard’s rules against bullying. The corporation wished to convey it wouldn’t bow to outside pressure.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cde...

Are the Students Cheating? – WSJ

Dec. 10, 2023 11:50 am ETNaomi Schaefer Riley’s review of “The Peer Effect” by Syed Ali and Margaret Chin (Bookshelf, Dec. 7) asks, “Why is Stuyvesant such a success?” Anyone who has read David Callahan’s scathing book “The Cheating Culture” might answer that question with another question: Were the students cheating? Has the school’s culture changed that much since the latter book’s 2004 publication?Robert A. YostCopyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Texas and the Politics of School Choice

Isn’t Texas supposed to be the land of the free and brave? Apparently not when it comes to education. Some GOP legislators in the Lone Star State have bowed to the teachers union and scuttled a bill to expand school choice, but they could pay a political price for it.Texas is a rare GOP-led state with no school-choice programs, but Gov. Greg Abbott has made establishing one a top priority. This autumn he called legislators back to Austin to pass a universal education savings account (ESA) bill. Each student would be eligible for $10,500 annually, which parents could spend on private school tuition and other education expenses. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Pandemic Learning Loss Hit the U.S. Hard. It’s as Bad or Worse Across the World.

The most comprehensive global look at test scores since the pandemic shows learning loss is a stubborn worldwide problem, with American 15-year-olds experiencing similar or slightly less severe setbacks compared with peers in other countries. Economically developed nations saw substantial drops in reading and math on international exams, according to new data released Tuesday. U.S. scores also declined sharply in math but held roughly steady in reading.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Title IX and the Assault on Hillsdale College

Hillsdale, Mich.Embedded in a civil lawsuit against Hillsdale College is an assault on the fabric of this small, private Christian school founded in 1844. The lawsuit, brought by two undergraduate women who allege that they were raped two years ago by male Hillsdale students of their acquaintance, alleges not only that the college was negligent in handling their complaints, but also that it failed to afford them the protection to which they were entitled under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.
