Dutch government scraps plans to cut flights at Amsterdam Schiphol – Business Traveller

The Dutch government has suspended controversial plans to cap the number of flights at Amsterdam Schiphol airport next year. The so-called Experimental Rule would have seen a cap of 460,000 flights imposed at the airport for 2024 (down from around 500,000), in a bid to reduce noise pollution. Earlier this year several airlines including KLM, easyJet, TUI and Delta went to court to successfully challenge the plans, only for the court of appeal to rule in favour of the Dutch authorities. However – as discussed on our forum – the cuts meant that several US carriers including JetBlue were denied slots at Schiphol for summer 2024, and this in turn led to the threat of retaliation by US authorities, which could have resulted in Dutch flag carrier KLM’s slots being affected at US airports. Resp...

Amsterdam Schiphol raising airport charges by nearly 15 per cent – Business Traveller

Amsterdam Schiphol has announced plans to raise its airport charges for 2024 by more than previously expected, “due to lost income in 2022”. Charges will increase by 14.8 per cent next year, rather than the previously expected 12 per cent. The airport said that the move was a result of lost revenue during the pandemic, with remaining travel restrictions at the start of 2022 leading to fewer flights. Schiphol stressed that legislation meant it was not permitted to make any profit from airport charges, with monies received being spent on facilities and services used by airlines, including runway maintenance, security, maintenance in the terminal and cleaning. The airport also said that where reduced flight numbers last year were a result of security staff shortages, it had not included the...

Schiphol capacity cuts “must not be pushed through by a caretaker government” – Business Traveller

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), Airlines for America (A4A), European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), and European Regions Airline Association (ERA) have published a joint statement urging the Dutch government to delay any decision on capacity cuts at Amsterdam Schiphol airport. In July authorities were granted permission to temporarily cap flight movements at the airport, having overturned an initial decision against the cuts in the court of appeal. Dutch government wins appeal to cap flights at Schiphol However around the same time the Dutch government collapsed as a result of a disagreement between coalition parties over asylum policies, and a caretaker government is currently in place until elections can take place later this year. The statement by IATA and ...

Dutch government wins appeal to cap flights at Schiphol – Business Traveller

Amsterdam Schiphol airport has been granted permission to temporarily cap flight movements, in a move which it says is aimed at addressing noise pollution and environmental concerns. The cap was first announced by Schiphol – which is majority owned by the Dutch government – in February this year, only for several airlines including KLM, easyJet, TUI and Delta to go to court and successfully challenge the plans. However the court of appeal has overturned the initial ruling, paving the way for Schiphol to cut movements by some 40,000 flights next year. In response flag carrier KLM said that it was “disappointed” and was studying the ruling. “The court does not specify in concrete terms how an experimental regulation can be applied,” said KLM. “As a result, it is currently unclear when, how...

Amsterdam Schiphol extends pre-booked security check time slots to all destinations – Business Traveller

Amsterdam Schiphol has expended its service enabling customers to pre-book time slots for their departure security checks. The initiative was launched earlier this year for departures to Schengen destinations, and has now been extended to include non-Schengen routes. The service is free of charge, with passengers able to reserve slots up to three days before departure on the Schiphol website or app. They will then receive a confirmation email containing a QR code, which can be scanned at the airport by a member of staff, who will direct the customer to the correct security check entry point. Time slots are open for 15 minutes, and travellers are advised to wait at Plaza area if they arrive early as it may not yet be active. Those that are late, however, may have to use the regular route ...
