Security News This Week: The Cloud Company at the Center of a Global Hacking Spree

Between a cascade of indictments against former US president Donald Trump, a tumultuous 2024 election season (in which Trump is a main character), and the rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence, 2024 is shaping up to be a complete nightmare. At the center of it will be a rise in personalized disinformation. Not only will there be more BS to sift through thanks to tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, but the disinformation will likely be more effective, and even tailored to target specific groups with frightening consequences. Of course, some of this could be fixed with new regulations. But the US Congress still hasn’t figured out how to tackle privacy, and regulating AI will only be more difficult. In addition to disinformation, people keep figuring out new ways to break through ...

Ukrainian ‘Kamikaze’ Boat Blows Up Russian Tanker – RedState

Footage of what the press has labeled a Ukrainian “kamikaze” boat blowing up a Russian tanker has been released. In it, you see the boat pulling up to seemingly identify the target before turning in a circle and coming back to strike the anchored vessel. That boat was heavily damaged and was eventually towed to shore for repairs. It’s important to note that while the term “kamikaze” is being used by many outlets, the boat was actually an unmanned drone. Excellent footage of the strike on the Russian tanker in the Black Sea, which was originally confused for an attack against the illegal bridge. Obviously, this incident was ov...

India’s Russian oil binge may slow on lower discounts, payment woes: Source

NEW DELHI: Indian imports of Russian crude are likely to decline on narrowing discounts and payment problems, forcing refiners to boost supplies from other sources, a senior government official told reporters on Monday.Russia has emerged as the biggest oil supplier to India after Western nations shunned purchases from Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine in February last year. Indian refiners have been gorging on Russian oil on the basis of deep discounts to benchmark Brent prices. But discounts on Russia's flagship Urals grade have tumbled to $3-$3.5 a barrel for August loading and September delivery, while the availability of Russian oil in spot markets has declined, a source at one Indian refiner said. That discount is down from $8-9 per barrel in July and is $1-2 per barrel narrower than...

Four Months After His Ukraine Stumble, DeSantis Offers Tucker Carlson Word Salad Instead

DES MOINES, Iowa ― Four months after getting tripped up in a Tucker Carlson questionnaire about Ukraine that forced a quick backtrack, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Friday at the 2023 Family Leadership Summit dealt with the same topic by the same inquisitor with seven minutes of non-answer.DeSantis talked about his time spent in Iraq as a Navy lawyer, about the Mexican border and how many migrants are crossing illegally, about how fentanyl traffickers would end up “stone cold dead” if he were in office, how it’s humiliating that the United States is running low on ammunition, how the real threat was China, and how in Florida they have banned the purchase of land by the Chinese communist party.“I think the goal should be to have sustainable peace in Europe. OK, we don’t want there to be...
