Cautious investors brace for volatility, negative opening

MUMBAI: Dalal Street investors are bracing for heightened volatility and a negative opening on Monday as the Iran-Israel conflict will compound turmoil in global markets. Traders would remain cautious and wait for cues to take a view about the market's trend, they said. For one, any escalation of the conflict could have a direct impact on crude oil prices globally.Over the past two weeks, crude prices have been on an upward path after Ukraine and Russia both targeted each other's energy installations. With crude among India's top import items, this could mean pressure on the currency and domestic inflation, economists and analysts said.In the last one month, Brent crude prices have jumped about 6% to above the $90/barrel level, and analysts expect it could soon break above the $100-mark i...

Kim Jong Un’s 2024 Wish List: More Nuclear Bombs, Spy-Satellite Launches

SEOUL—Throughout 2023, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for the expansion of his country’s weapons arsenal. This year, he plans more of the same. Pyongyang plans to carry out three more spy-satellite launches and accelerate nuclear-weapons production in 2024, Kim told top North Korean officials in recent year-end meetings. The 39-year-old dictator ruled out reunification with South Korea. And he echoed prior dissatisfactions with the U.S., urging his country to prepare for an armed conflict that could occur at any time. Copyright ©2024 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. The drone and missile barrage was the worst in months with Kyiv counting a total of 158 fired at a range of targets across the country. As usual with Russia, civilians weren’t spared. Ukraine’s Crimea Offensive – WSJ

The current narrative about the war in Ukraine is that Russia has regained the offensive and is making gains in the east. But that’s not how it looked Tuesday on the bridge of the Novocherkassk, a Russian warship struck by Ukrainian cruise missiles.Online videos posted by Ukrainian authorities showed a large explosion on the amphibious landing ship. Russia’s defense ministry acknowledged a Ukrainian missile had “damaged” the Novocherkassk, in addition to killing one and wounding two, the state news agency Tass reported. China’s Yuan Is Quietly Gaining Ground

Chinese assets have had a terrible year—but China’s currency is gaining ground as an international payments option. The yuan’s status as a global currency still faces a huge obstacle in the form of China’s own capital controls. Even so, rising willingness to conduct trade in yuan could help insulate China’s economy, at least to an extent, in the event sanctions were imposed in a hypothetical future conflict with the West. It also could become a source of structural support for the yuan itself, even assuming weaker-than-expected Chinese growth in the years to come.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Alexei Navalny Lives – WSJ

Some residual good news for courage in 2023: Alexei Navalny is alive and has been located in a distant prison colony. His team says the leading opponent of Vladimir Putin’s despotism was moved without announcement to a prison called the Polar Wolf in the remote Arctic region of Yamalo-Nenets. This a frozen, isolated area known for some of the most brutal conditions in the Putin-era gulag. The context for his isolation is the Russian presidential election scheduled for March 17. There’s no chance Mr. Putin will lose in the rigged political system. But before Mr. Navalny disappeared, he and his team launched a campaign to expose that Mr. Putin is far less popular than the Kremlin claims.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
