Rudy Giuliani files for bankruptcy following $148 million defamation suit judgment

Former New York City mayor and Donald Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani filed for bankruptcy Thursday, according to a court filing. Giuliani filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy less than a week after a jury ordered him to pay $148 million in damages to Fulton County election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, who sued him for defamation. He estimates his liabilities are between about $100 million and $500 million. "This maneuver is unsurprising, and it will not succeed in discharging Mr. Giuliani's debt to Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss," Michael Gottleib, a lawyer for the two women, said in a statement. On Wednesday, the federal judge overseeing the case ordered Giuliani to compensate the pair of election workers immediately, expressing concern that he may have ...

Giuliani ordered to immediately pay $148 million to Georgia election workers he defamed

Rudy Giuliani must immediately pay $148 million to two Georgia election workers he defamed, with a federal judge suggesting the former New York mayor may have been dishonest about his finances and expressing concern he might not comply with the judgment. The latest twist in the defamation case comes just days after Giuliani was ordered to pay $148 million to the two women, Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Wandrea "Shaye" Moss. Giuliani had falsely claimed in the wake of the 2020 presidential election that they engaged in a fake ballot processing scheme while they served as election workers. In a scathing ruling on Wednesday, Judge Beryl Howell questioned Giuliani's objections that he couldn't afford to pay a large monetary award. "Such claims of Giuliani's 'financial difficulties' — no matte...

The Tragedy of Rudy Giuliani

The tragedy of Rudy Giuliani continues to escalate with last week’s jury award of $148 million in a defamation suit brought by two Georgia election workers. What a long, strange decline it’s been for the former mayor who rescued New York City from a previous era of progressive decline. The eight-member Washington, D.C., jury awarded the two election workers three times more than the $48 million they sought, and that is likely to be reduced by the trial judge or an appellate court.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Watching Rudy Giuliani Self-Destruct at a Defamation Trial in Washington

When Rudy Giuliani finally arrived at Elijah Barrett Prettyman U.S. Courthouse, in Washington, D.C., on Monday—stiff-legged, about ten minutes late, unapologetic—his attorney, a former U.S. Army Ranger named Joseph Sibley, tucked him into the large and lonely defense table where the two of them sat, alone, with their giant bottles of water. Sibley had drained much of his while waiting. The former mayor of New York began pulling items out of an overstuffed black backpack that looked like something a sixth grader might bring to school. He’d arrived for the most recent phase in a defamation suit brought by two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Shaye Moss, whose backs remained turned to him throughout the day.Beginning on December 3, 2020, during a hearing before the Ge...

Rudy Giuliani, Hard Up for Cash, Lands a New Georgia Lawyer

Nov. 24, 2023 11:00 am ETATLANTA—After nearly two months without legal representation amid dwindling finances, Rudy Giuliani has a lawyer in Georgia. L. Allyn Stockton Jr., who made his first court appearance for Giuliani last week, isn’t well-known outside of North Georgia. Perhaps his biggest claim to fame was a 2015 appearance before a congressional panel looking into a bear-hunting sting carried out by authorities along the Georgia-North Carolina border.
