OAG reveals busiest airline routes in 2023 – Business Traveller

Aviation analytics firm OAG has published its report on the busiest airline routes for 2023, with Kuala Lumpur International-Singapore Changi topping the list of international routes. The route had a total of 4.9 million seats last year, pushing Cairo-Jeddah down to second spot with 4.8 million seats. Seven of the top ten busiest international routes involved Asia-Pacific destinations, with Hong Kong-Taipei taking third spot with 4.6 million seats (down around 43 per cent on 2019 levels). New York JFK-London Heathrow came in eighth position with 3.9 million seats. Royal Jordanian announces routes to London Stansted and Manchester – Business Traveller

Royal Jordanian Airlines is expanding its global network with the launch of two new routes to the UK. The oneworld member airline will introduce direct routes between Amman in Jordan to London Stansted and Manchester from March 2024, with a flight duration of approximately five hours. RJ will offer four weekly flights to London Stansted from 3 March, 2024 followed by three-times-weekly flights to Manchester on 6 March, 2024. Vietjet launches two new Asia routes – Business Traveller

Continuing its global and regional expansion, Vietnamese carrier Vietjet Air has inaugurated two ner services – Hanoi-Jakarta and Phu Quoc – Busan (South Korea). Vietjet’s new route between Hanoi and Jakarta will operate four return flights a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, with a flight time of just over four hours each way. The carrier’s Phu Quoc – Busan route also launched on 11 December, connecting the Vietnamese resort island with Busan daily via a 5 hours and 30 minutes flight. Lufthansa Group extends Green Fares to selected long-haul routes – Business Traveller

Lufthansa Group has further extended its carbon offsetting Green Fares, with the option now available on 12 long-haul routes. The group first announced plans for the fare option in August last year, which allows passengers to purchase a ticket which includes the offsetting of their individual flight-related CO2 emissions, along with other benefits including additional status miles and a free rebooking option. Air New Zealand suspends Seoul and Hobart routes – Business Traveller

On 7 November, Auckland-based Star Alliance member Air New Zealand said it now has a clearer understanding of the Pratt & Whitney (P&W) engine maintenance schedule changes and the impact it will have on its passengers and operations. As a result, the airline will suspend its services to Seoul in South Korea, and Hobart in Tasmania, Australia, next year. China Airlines boosts Japan, Korea routes in schedule update – Business Traveller

China Airlines (CAL), the Taiwan flag carrier, will operate up to 180 flights a week to Japan and South Korea in the winter schedule to 30 March. Flights from Taoyuan to Tokyo (Narita) will increase to 24 weekly rotations, while flights from Taipei downtown Songshan airport to Tokyo’s Haneda will run twice a day. CAL will also maintain a daily Kaohsiung-Narita service, equating to up to 45 weekly flights and at least six daily flights to and from Tokyo. British Airways launches new routes to Accra and Riga – Business Traveller

British Airways has inaugurated new routes to the capitals of Ghana and Latvia. The carrier is now operating three flights per week between Gatwick and Accra, with a fourth weekly service set to be added from April 2024. The route – which BA last served in the early 2000s – complements the carrier’s existing daily Heathrow-Accra flights. JetBlue has announced a further expansion of its transatlantic network, with the addition of seasonal services to Dublin and Edinburgh in 2024. Jet2 has announced plans to serve two Moroccan destinations from winter 2024. Qantas extends neighbour-free seat trial to more international routes – Business Traveller

Following a trial on domestic services earlier this year, Australia’s Qantas Airways is now extending its Neighbour-Free seating trial to 19 international routes. Destinations included in the current trial include Singapore, Auckland, Christchurch, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas and Honolulu. The service is available to eligible passengers booked in economy class. Premium economy or business class passengers will not be offered this option. Neighbour-Free seating will start from A$45 on trans-Tasman flights, A$100 (US$63) between Australia and Singapore, and A$225 between Australia and the United States.
