Worldwide, 2024 Elections Promise a Whirlwind

Dec. 28, 2023 12:49 pm ETIt’s (almost) election year, baby! Every year is important in its way, and most elections matter to someone. Even so, 2024 promises to be unusually electorally exciting due to the sheer amount of voting across the democratic world—and over what issues. What seems likely to be an awful U.S. presidential election in November is only part of the story. Hyperventilation about Donald Trump’s supposedly authoritarian instincts and well-founded concerns over Biden family corruption will motivate the major parties’ bases. But don’t lose sight of the global significance of this contest, given the security and economic threats and challenges confronting the winner. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Sunak tells Covid inquiry that describing Treasury as ‘pro-death squad’ was wrong – video | UK news

Rishi Sunak has rejected a characterisation of the Treasury under his chancellorship as a 'pro-death squad'. The expression was attributed to Boris Johnson in a diary entry by the chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, but Hugo Keith KC did not say the term was used by Johnson himself when he asked Sunak about it. Sunak told the inquiry: 'I do not think it is a fair characterisation'

India-UK FTA: How OPEC+ saw its hold on global oil markets fray despite extra production cuts

The OPEC+ coalition’s grip on global oil markets is looking less secure by the day.Crude traders have shrugged off the Nov. 30 pledge from Saudi Arabia and its allies to slash supplies by a further 900,000 barrels a day, remaining skeptical of its implementation. Despite the group’s multiple attempts to shore up sentiment in the past week, prices have crashed 11% to a five-month low. Some of the most powerful figures in the oil world such as Saudi Arabia’s energy chief and Russia’s deputy prime minister have issued public assurances that the supply curbs could be extended beyond March. President Vladimir Putin made a rare visit to Riyadh and Abu Dhabi in a show of oil producers’ unity. All to no avail. Traders are doubtful that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its alli...

The British Tories’ Desperation Budget

United Kingdom Chancellor Jeremy Hunt on Wednesday unveiled a new budget, and what do you know. He and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have finally realized they need faster economic growth. But it’s probably far too little and way too late. This week’s Autumn Statement marks the last opportunity Messrs. Sunak and Hunt are likely to have to impress voters before an election expected next year. The Tories are down by double digits in the polls against the Labour Party in large part because voters are sour on the economy. Inflation peaked at 11.1% in October 2022 and only recently fell below 5%. Wage growth is far from catching up to the new price level, and growth remains soft.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Rishi Sunak Rearranges the Deck Chairs

United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reshuffled his cabinet Monday, and Britons can be forgiven if they don’t learn his new ministers’ names. They might not be around long. Changing ministers at this late date is unlikely to change the bleak Tory prospects in an election expected next year. The reshuffle brought two major personnel changes. One is the firing of Suella Braverman as home secretary with responsibility for policing and immigration. Her sins are said to include publishing a controversial column last week in the Times of London (which shares ownership with this newspaper) criticizing pro-Palestine marches in London, and failing to stop illegal immigration across the English Channel.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Welsh: UK agrees major joint investment plan with Tata Steel for Welsh steelworks

LONDON: The UK on Friday announced that it had agreed a joint investment package with Tata Steel for the country's largest steelworks in Wales, including a grant worth up to GBP 500 million - dubbed one of the largest British government support packages in history and a "defining moment" for the steel industry. As part of the agreement, the Indian steel giant is expected to invest GBP 1.25 billion, including the government grant, in a new Electric Arc Furnace and related facilities for greener steel production at Port Talbot in South Wales, currently the UK's largest single carbon emitter. The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) said the proposal, which is subject to information and consultation processes led by Tata Steel, has the potential to safeguard over 5,000 jobs across Britai...

PM Modi discusses progress of India-UK FTA negotiations with PM Rishi Sunak

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reviewed the progress of the ongoing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, on Saturday. PM Modi met Sunak, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi. Under discussion since 2022, the FTA has seen 12 rounds of talks. India had earlier expected to resolve pending issues such as rules of origin, bilateral investment treaty and intellectual property rights, among others, by the end of August. Out of the total 26 chapters in the proposed FTA, 19 have been closed. Indian-origin Sunak is on his first visit to India since becoming Prime Minister in October 2022. "Both leaders expressed hope that the remain...
