Match Report – SURR vs SOM 9th Match, April 12 – 15, 2024

Surrey 358 for 6 (Sibley 100, Burns 75, Foakes 57, Smith 51) lead Somerset 285 by 73 runsThe first sunny Saturday at the Kia Oval rarely disappoints. This place may turn into the biggest beer garden in London when the Blast and Hundred are in town, but it's the County Championship that gets first use of this joint for a more relaxing ease into the summer. And as close to 2000 whittled the hours away in the stands, Surrey's push for a three-peat truly began. They lead Somerset by 73 runs, thanks largely to Dom Sibley's first hundred at home since returning in 2023, with valuable contributions from skipper Rory Burns, Jamie Smith, and Ben Foakes. Was it perfect? Certainly not. They could and perhaps should have been more than 358 to the good in their first innings, with more than the four wi...

Essex 421 for 6 (Elgar 120, Critchley 103*, Cox 67) vs KentNothing changes with any great speed at Chelmsford. Plans are currently afoot for a grand renovation of the pavilion and its surrounding concourse - the only corner of this postage-stamp ground with any wriggle-room for expansion - though rather like this week's announcement that the ground's Hayes Close and River Ends have been renamed in honour of its most storied Test performers, Graham Gooch and Sir Alastair Cook, there's been no pretence of an upgrade in signage in the interim. Indeed, the interactive "Graham Napier Sixes Trail", with its 16 plaques to commemorate each of Napier's swings for the bleachers in his famous T20 onslaught against Sussex in 2008, remains Chelmsford's most visible tribute to any former player, Graham...

Surrey 42 for 0 trail Somerset 285 (Lammonby 100, Renshaw 87, Gregory 50, Steel 4-50, Atkinson 3-57) by 243 runsThe only trouble with exponential growth is the knowledge that it cannot last forever. After his rapid rise in 2023, Gus Atkinson spent the first three months of this year doing very little of note: flying around India with England's Test squad, bowling in the nets, kicking footballs and occasionally acting as an overqualified drinks waiter.Towards the end of that tour, he was pulled out of the IPL, where he stood to earn roughly £100,000 but was likely to spend two months on the Kolkata Knight Riders bench. That meant it took until April 12 for Atkinson to play his first match of 2024, after he was - surprisingly - told to rest by the ECB in Surrey's season opener against Lanca...

Match Report – MI vs RCB 25th Match, April 11, 2024

Mumbai Indians 199 for 3 (Kishan 69, Suryakumar 52, Rohit 38, Jacks 1-24) beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru 196 for 8 (Du Plessis 61, Karthik 53*, Patidar 50, Bumrah 5-21) by seven wicketsThe bash-through-the-line Wankhede pitch and dewy conditions contributed to five 50-plus scores, including a 17-ball half-century from Suryakumar Yadav, but it was Jasprit Bumrah who produced the most decisive performance on the night to set up Mumbai Indians' second successive victory at home.Bumrah's 5 for 21 - he was on a hat-trick twice - kept Royal Challengers Bengaluru to 196 for 8, despite Dinesh Karthik's inventive 53 not out off 23 balls. Karthik hit four sixes and a four off the last seven legal balls he faced to give RCB a biggish total. But it looked smaller than it was when Ishan Kishan cracke...

London City Airport reports 50 per cent reduction in security queue times – Business Traveller

London City Airport says queue times at security have been cut by half since the installation of new CT scanners one year ago. London City became the first major airport in the UK to fully deploy next generation CT security scanners in April 2023, allowing passengers to pass through security without removing laptops and liquids from their hand luggage. Passengers flying from London City Airport are also no longer restricted by the 100ml liquid rule, and can take through bottles of up to two litres. In December 2022 the DfT announced what it called an end to the “tiny toiletries” rule by 2024, with all major airports required to replace existing 2D screening technology with more advanced CT security scanners by June of this year. Nonetheless, not all airports are introducing new security ...

Essex 253 (Cox 84, Elgar 80, Paterson 5-49) and 374 for 9 dec (Walter 79, Critchley 68) beat Nottinghamshire 293 (Clarke 104, Haynes 77) and 80 (Cook 6-14) by 254 runsSam Cook spearheaded Essex's 254-run win over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, taking 6 for 14 on the final day to go with his first-innings hat-trick. Cook finished with match figures of 10 for 73, dispelling concerns about his effectiveness with the Kookaburra ball which is being used in four rounds of the 2024 County Championship season."I am pretty chuffed with the way the ball has come out this week, particularly with it being a Kookaburra," Cook said. "There have been some questions about what I could do with a Kookaburra ball… I'm desperate to play for England and hopefully that performance is something towards that."...

Match Report – DERBS vs GLOUC 1st Match, April 05 – 08, 2024

The start of the new season at Derby ended in anti-climax and frustration when the Vitality County Championship match between Derbyshire and Gloucestershire was abandoned without a ball bowled.Weeks of rain leading up to the match followed by more bad weather over the four days left the County Ground outfield saturated and unfit for first-class cricket. Following more rain on Sunday night, umpires Ian Blackwell and Neil Pratt called the match off after an inspection at 9.45am on Monday morning. It is the first time a County Championship game at Derby has been abandoned without a ball bowled since the match against Nottinghamshire was completely washed out in May 1981.Both teams take eight points and will now hope for better weather in their next fixtures with Gloucestershire hosting Yorksh...
