Grow vegetables in CT and save money

Anyone who grocery shops on a regular basis has likely noticed a higher tally at the checkout counter. The latest consumer pricing analysis from the USDA is predicting a 1.3 percent increase in food prices. While we can’t do much to lower the prices, one thing we can do is grow some of our own vegetables and herbs. The investment in a small 100 square foot or so garden is not large, and one can be assured of healthy, high quality fresh produce. Vegetable gardeners can also control what, if any, types of pesticides are used on the plants. One source suggested that a $70 investment in plants and seeds could produce a harvest worth $600 or more over the growing season. Already having basic garden tools was probably taken for granted. If yard space is limited or too shaded, consider renting a...

Tariffs and the Common Man

With Donald Trump leading the 2024 polls while calling for a 10% universal tariff, the new GOP protectionists are trying to sell this idea as a boon for the working class. The evidence exposes this folly: Trade wars invite painful retaliation, prop up politically favored industries at the expense of others, and raise prices on consumers like an invisible tax. They hurt the average worker. The economic literature on this point is voluminous. To pick one place to start, here was the conclusion of a study of Mr. Trump’s last trade wars, written in 2019 by two Federal Reserve economists: “We find that U.S. manufacturing industries more exposed to tariff increases experience relative reductions in employment as a positive effect from import protection is offset by larger negative effects from r...

Shale Is Keeping the World Awash With Oil as Conflicts Abound

Updated Jan. 1, 2024 12:05 am ETA surprise surge in American oil and gas production and exports is helping to keep the world stocked, blunting the impact of widening conflict in the Middle East that has crimped key shipping lanes. When Iranian-backed Houthi militants began launching missiles and drones at ships crossing the Red Sea near Yemen in October, many feared disruption to the vital shipping lane would drive up energy prices. But oil and gas prices this past month have sunk about 5% and 23%, respectively. Copyright ©2024 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Biden’s Drug-Price Boomerang – WSJ

President Biden keeps trying to persuade Americans his policies are helping them, but voters aren’t buying it. The latest example is the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) Medicare drug rebates, which are raising the cost of medicines. The White House on Thursday proclaimed that the IRA’s drug rebates are already saving seniors money: “President Biden’s prescription drug law cracks down on price gouging from Big Pharma.”Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Creditors Cite Poll to Question Judge’s Impartiality in Fee Dispute

Dec. 15, 2023 5:48 pm ET|WSJ ProCreditors of 4E Brands say findings of a survey they commissioned support their case for Judge Marvin Isgur of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston to recuse himself from weighing in on a dispute over legal fees the maker of hand sanitizer paid its law firm.  The creditors are seeking the return to 4E Brands of fees it paid to the Jackson Walker law firm. The creditors say Isgur shouldn’t rule on their request because of his friendship and professional relationship of more than two decades with David R. Jones, a former bankruptcy judge who had been handling the company’s chapter 11 case.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Luxury Stores Are Bursting With Unsold Stuff

Fashionistas can smell blood. Luxury brands need to find ways to unload their growing pile of unsold stock without reeking of desperation. The luxury industry is slowing as shoppers sober up after their pandemic spending spree. In 2022, sales across the sector rose by 15% at constant exchange rates, according to Bain & Company estimates. But U.S. shoppers tightened their belts toward the end of last year, and Europeans followed this summer. The Chinese haven’t been spending as much as brands hoped either since Covid-19 restrictions were lifted in January. This year’s growth rate is expected to be around half what the industry managed in 2022. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Europe’s Gas Prices Could Fall Further Next Year on Subdued Demand, Ample Inventories

European natural-gas prices are expected to decline further next year amid lackluster demand and above-average inventories despite a cold start to the winter across the continent, according to some analysts.A wave of chilling temperatures has swept parts of Europe in recent days but did little to lift prices, with storage sites at comfortable levels after unusually mild weather over the fall delayed the start of the heating season and preserved stockpiles.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
