Worldwide, 2024 Elections Promise a Whirlwind

Dec. 28, 2023 12:49 pm ETIt’s (almost) election year, baby! Every year is important in its way, and most elections matter to someone. Even so, 2024 promises to be unusually electorally exciting due to the sheer amount of voting across the democratic world—and over what issues. What seems likely to be an awful U.S. presidential election in November is only part of the story. Hyperventilation about Donald Trump’s supposedly authoritarian instincts and well-founded concerns over Biden family corruption will motivate the major parties’ bases. But don’t lose sight of the global significance of this contest, given the security and economic threats and challenges confronting the winner. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Many More Voters With Guns

More than half of American voters say that they or someone in their household owns a gun, according to a poll by NBC News. That’s the highest level since its polls began asking in 1999. After progressives drove up firearm ownership with policies that are soft on violent crime, they can’t figure out why their gun-control ideas fail to pass. The share of voters with a firearm in the household is 52%, up from 46% in 2019 and 42% in 2013. A partisan split is evident. Gun households now include 66% of Republicans, 45% of independents, and 41% of Democrats. This is no surprise, in part because rural areas tilt right, and that’s where hunting is a family event and bears might be prowling the woods.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. How Bidenomics May Cost Biden the Youth Vote

Nov. 12, 2023 12:50 pm ETPresident Biden turns 81 on Nov. 20, and polls show that Democrats are increasingly worried about his mental and physical decline. But the incumbent has another age problem: Donald Trump is running on par with him among young voters.Mr. Biden won the youth vote by double digits in 2020, while seniors swung for Mr. Trump. Recent polls, however, show that seniors are now the only age group that favors Mr. Biden in a rematch. It isn’t difficult to explain the reversal. Bidenomics has exacted a massive wealth transfer from young people to seniors.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

‘Henry Taylor: B Side’ Review: A Contemporary Brush With Genius

New YorkIt’s a simple thing, an exhibition of paintings. For all the curators, academics, gallerists, advisers, collectors and—yes—critics who might play a role in a painting’s life, it is, at the end, the most approachable of forms: An artist has an idea, tries to put it down on canvas, and you look at it. This straightforwardness may be one reason shows like “Henry Taylor: B Side” are so rare: There’s little room for the artist to hide. Now, viewers have become accustomed to any large solo exhibition of a contemporary artist at a major museum including all sorts of accouterments. Happenings. Activations. Immersions. Experiences.
