Heathrow urges government to drop ETA scheme for transit passengers – Business Traveller

Heathrow Airport says the recently introduced Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme is impacting transit figures, and is urging the government to take action “to level the playing field”. The phased roll out of the ETA scheme was launched in November for Qatari citizens, requiring travellers to apply for the digital documentation ahead of travel and pay a £10 fee. The requirement applies to passengers either travelling to or transiting through the UK. Heathrow said that in the first four months of the scheme being in place it had seen 19,000 fewer transit passengers from Qatar, “with the transfer route recording its lowest monthly proportions for over ten years each month since the implementation of ETAs”. Changi airport offers free bike hire to passengers with a layover – Business Traveller

Singapore Changi airport is offering free bike hire to passengers with a layover in Singapore. Travellers are free to use the bikes for two hours to explore attractions in the vicinity, including the Jurassic Mile and nearby beaches along Singapore’s East Coast. Note that passengers must have at least 5.5 hours but less than 24 hours till their connecting flights. They will also need to clear immigration and have an entry visa for Singapore, if required. Malaysia Airlines expands free inflight wifi provision to all passengers – Business Traveller

Malaysia Airlines has introduced free inflight for all passengers on selected aircraft. The service will initially be available on 20 A350, A330-200 and A330-300 aircraft, before being rolled out to selected narrowbody planes in phases. All passengers on these aircraft will be able to connect to inflight wifi for free, regardless of cabin class or loyalty tier. The move follows the provision of free wifi on the above aircraft for Business Suite, business class and Enrich Platinum passengers earlier this year. New strikes at Gatwick to affect 45,000 passengers – Business Traveller

Gatwick airport is set to be disrupted by eight days of strike action this month due to a dispute over pay. The Unite union confirmed that the strike will involve over 230 employees from Red Handling, a ground handling company, and Wilson James, which operates the passenger assistance contract at the airport. Red Handling is responsible for ground handling for airlines including Norse Atlantic, Delta Air Lines, TAP Air Portugal and Saudi. Red Handling employees are scheduled to strike from Friday 18 August until Monday 21 August. Ryanair carries over 18 million monthly passengers for first time – Business Traveller

Ryanair has set a new record for the number of monthly passengers, with 18.7 million customers carried in July. The figure compares to the 16.8 million passengers flown over the same period in 2022. It is also the first time in the airline’s history that it has carried over 18 million customers in one month – the previous record was 17.4 million in June this year. Rolling 12-month passenger figures to the end of July stand at 175.3 million – up 23 per cent on the same stage in 2022. Ryanair recently published its financial figures for the quarter to 30 June, 2023, showing a profit of €663 million for the period – up from €170 million for the same quarter in 2022.
