As COVID cases flare, some schools and businesses reinstate mask mandates

A familiar pandemic-era safety measure is making a comeback as new COVID-19 variants surface and cases of the disease flare in some parts of the U.S.: Mask mandates. The number of COVID-19 cases has climbed for several weeks, with health authorities saying they're tracking the spread of three new variants. As a result, some businesses and other institutions are again requiring people to wear masks, which have proved an effective tool for slowing the spread of the virus.Like vaccine requirements, cities and states have widely dropped mask mandates as COVID rates have dropped since peaking in 2022. In February, for example, New York state dropped a requirement that face coverings be worn even in health care settings, in line with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ...

Does Trump’s Shutdown Decision Disqualify a Future Presidency? – RedState

So, I’m having a friendly debate with somebody about this “IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I’M COMING AFTER YOU!” post by Mr. Trump… My friend, a retired police officer, is a great guy, salt of the earth, etc. He thinks it’s an understandable representation of Trump’s frustration. And maybe it is. But the question remains, did Trump’s attorneys have the chance to see that post before he pushed “send”? Did anybody above the age of 14? Does anybody honestly think had his attorneys seen it, they’d have said, “Yes, Mr. President, we think that’s a really swell post; put that jazz up ASAP”? Does Donald Trump have a moral obligation to listen to his attorneys if they didn’t? Well, when you consider that his working-class supporters, through their small-dollar donations, are picking up his attorneys’ bills...

Soft drinks flowing freely in Indian homes

MUMBAI: Cold beverages, which include soft drinks, squashes, powdered mixes and packaged juices, have seen in-home penetration rise to 47% in May as against 38% in 2019, a survey showed. In-home penetration refers to the number of households in the survey that consumed the product. Average household consumption of soft drinks too has increased to just over 7 litres annually from 6.5 litres in 2019.This 47% in-home penetration, according to marketing data and analytics company Kantar, which shared the household panel data exclusively with TOI, is significantly better than any 12-month period before the pandemic. "Whatever struggle the sector faced in the summers of 2020 and 2021 was wiped out by strong performance in 2022 and a reasonably good 2023. There have been important strides that t...

Biden Adminstration Suspends Funding to Wuhan Institute of Virology Over Safety Concerns – RedState

The Biden Administration’s Department of Health and Human Services has discontinued sending federal dollars to the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, citing concerns over safety and documentation. The bio-research lab at the center of the debate over the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic was still receiving federal funding despite multiple U.S. reports that the lab was the origin of the global pandemic that killed millions across the globe. In a memo released on Monday, HHS referenced EcoHealth Alliance, a non-profit organization that has been funding viral research around the globe for more than 20 years, and several grants that formed the basis of the HHS funding that went to the lab. The memo states that there is “adequate evidence which provides cause for the suspension” of the fu...

Judge limits Biden administration’s contact with social media companies

A judge on Tuesday prohibited several federal agencies and officials of the Biden administration from working with social media companies about "protected speech," a decision called "a blow to censorship" by one of the Republican officials whose lawsuit prompted the ruling.U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty of Louisiana granted the injunction in response to a 2022 lawsuit brought by attorneys general in Louisiana and Missouri. Their lawsuit alleged that the federal government overstepped in its efforts to convince social media companies to address postings that could result in vaccine hesitancy during the COVID-19 pandemic or affect elections.Doughty cited "substantial evidence" of a far-reaching censorship campaign. He wrote that the "evidence produced thus far depicts an almost d...
