U.S. Soccer took a gamble waiting for Emma Hayes, leaving USWNT’s style of play in limbo

In November, U.S. Soccer gambled that it was worth sacrificing a year of continuous preparation under a permanent manager to hire Emma Hayes. For eight months following the 2023 World Cup, interim management has overseen the U.S. women’s national team. To her credit, Twila Kilgore’s tenure as placeholder helped turn over the player pool and saw her team win a pair of tune-up competitions this spring.Still, it’s been a lost year for the program at a time when it was in sore need of a clear new vision. Hayes’ first games as USWNT manager in June are still two months away, bringing the post-World Cup interlude to 10 months — and a full seven months from her appointment in November. With the CONCACAF W Gold Cup and SheBelieves Cup in the rearview, it’s time to take stock. Is the program any be...

Auerbach: World Athletics’ new Olympic prize money rule is a chance for NCAA to right a wrong

The latest dent in the NCAA’s bedrock principle of amateurism came from an unlikely place: Monaco.Track and field gold medalists will become the first athletes to earn international prize money at the Olympics, the sport’s international governing body said Wednesday. Each gold medalist will receive $50,000 for individual wins. World Athletics, which governs track and field from its headquarters in Monaco, also pledged to award prize money to silver and bronze medalists at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.“It is important we start somewhere and make sure some of the revenues generated by our athletes at the Olympic Games are directly returned to those who make the Games the global spectacle that it is,” World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said in a statement. What is not yet clear is if...

Gabby Thomas: The U.S. track star with a bigger goal beyond Olympic medals

AUSTIN, Texas — There was a moment on a recent random Wednesday, as the world champion sprinter and Olympic medalist Gabrielle Thomas juggled emails about a meeting she had to run at a volunteer health clinic and readied for a voiceover for a commercial with a blue-chip sponsor and figured out the logistics of an upcoming weight-training session, when she had something of an epiphany.“I really did not perceive my life being the way it is now,” she said, looking up from her phone as she sipped a coffee at a cafe. She’s not kidding.Pretty much everything Thomas has accomplished in track, the two Olympic medals in Tokyo in 2021, the silver medal in the 200 meters and the gold medal in the 4×100-meter relay at the world championships last year in Budapest, is a little bit of a blur. She has an ...

The business of Sarah Nurse: She’s one of the faces of hockey, but her sights are set on more

TORONTO — Sarah Nurse was driving home from a recent PWHL Toronto practice when she got a bit of sage advice. It wasn’t from a podcast or a friend on the phone. The advice came courtesy of a billboard on the side of the road in Canada’s most populous city, featuring her own face with the Adidas slogan “You got this.”“I was like, yeah, I do,” Nurse said with a laugh. The billboard she drove past is one of many across the country, including a massive advertisement at Yonge-Dundas Square — Toronto’s closest approximation to Times Square in New York City — that pairs Nurse with Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes and World Cup champion Lionel Messi.Nurse, 29, has had major partnerships in the past. In 2020, Tim Hortons and Mattel collaborated to make a Barbie doll in her likeness. In 2022, she was f...

Editor’s note: This article is part of our “Origin Stories” series, focusing on the backstories of athletes and topics around the Summer Olympics. The world has seen two very public sides of Missy Franklin — the bubbly, vivacious 17-year-old star who won four gold medals at the London Olympics in 2012, and the devastated 21-year-old who did not qualify for finals in either of her individual events in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Franklin would later say that she felt like “swimming broke up with (her)” at the Rio Games and that it was the most difficult thing she’s ever experienced. After trying and failing to fight through excruciating shoulder pain, Franklin officially retired from competitive swimming in December 2018. She faced the question that all ex-elite athletes stare down at so...

Paris metro tickets to double in price during 2024 Olympics – Business Traveller

Metro ticket prices in the French capital will almost double during the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. A single metro ticket will increase from €2.10 to €4 for the period of 20 July until 8 September, a few days either side of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The temporary hike has been described as a “fair price” by Valérie Pécresse, president of the Île-de-France region. The price increase will only impact visitors to the city, with residents’ monthly and yearly metro passes unaffected. Pecresse announced the news on X (formerly Twitter): “During the Olympics and the Paralympics, the Ile de France region will dramatically increase its transport offer. It is out of question that the residents support that cost. “We’re going to create a new pass, the Paris 2024 pass, that will allow...

Katie Grimes, a two-time Olympian at 17, is U.S. swimming’s rising new star

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — With their 12-year-old daughter, Katie, swimming nearby, Shari and Christian Grimes stood on the pool deck talking to Sandpipers of Nevada coach Chris Barber. Christian had just been offered the deputy fire chief job in Logan, Utah, and the family was considering moving there from their home in Las Vegas.Barber is a good listener with a calm head, Shari says, and the Grimes family trusts him. So she didn’t take his words that day lightly. Barber started by saying that Katie could move anywhere and earn a college swimming scholarship.“But I’m telling you right now,” he continued, “there is something different about her. And if you leave her here, she will be an Olympian.”Shortly after, Ron Aitken, the Sandpipers CEO who coaches the team’s top swimmers, heard what ...

Jessie Diggins, America’s cross-country ski star, battles on after eating disorder relapse

It’s July, a time of year when Jessie Diggins, the greatest American to ever click into a pair of cross-country skis, is usually deep into her offseason training, the hours of roller skiing and running and strength work that she loves nearly as much as tearing through the snow in Norway in the middle of winter. There’s something wrong, though. She’s feeling something she has never felt — she’s just not sure she wants to do this anymore. She’s thinking about the upcoming season, the four months on the road away from her husband, existing in a constant state of weariness, journeys into the “pain cave” in nearly every race. In her 32 years on the planet, she has never had to search for motivation, never dreaded a workout, never wanted to do anything but push her body and mind to the edge of ex...
