Japan Offers Luxury Train Travel

Japan’s public transportation is known for its punctuality, efficiency and high-quality service, which means train travel is a great way to see the countryside and to experience Japanese culture — even if you’re squeezed into Tokyo’s crowded Yamanote line at rush hour or experiencing the popular high-speed Shinkansen bullet train. But many savvy visitors crisscross the country in another way, using luxury trains that resemble five-star hotels on rails.Luxury rail travel appeals to “someone who wants slow travel, the experience of excellent service in a contained environment, the finest dining, the most exquisite accommodation with private bathrooms,” Simon Pielow, co-founder of the Luxury Train Club, said by phone from Wiltshire County, England. “Things that many people have no idea is pos...

The Bahamian Island of Eleuthera Offers Beauty and the Sea, Crowd-Free

Twin Coves, on the Atlantic Ocean side of the narrow, finger-shaped Bahamian island of Eleuthera, is a gorgeous spot: Two crescent-shaped, pink-sand beaches free of crowds, with calm waters protected from heavy waves by offshore sandbars. But the real magic emerges when you walk into the crystal-clear sea.Just beneath the surface, a large outcropping of coral reef hosts an insane array of tropical fish — tens of thousands of them, darting back and forth, some going solo, others in giant schools swimming in unison, all wary but accepting of snorkeling newcomers.Floating over this aquatic wonder, with two daughters sloshing excitedly nearby, I was reminded again of the extraordinariness of Eleuthera — an island unknown to most travelers who head to the region, even though it is only 70 miles...

In County Donegal, Ireland, a Tiny Inn Offers a Hyper-Local Travel Experience

Cue the wizened locals ready to fleece them, the natural and man-made catastrophes, and you have all the makings of a bad sitcom, with Monocle meets Fawlty Towers as the log line. The reality is different: Cathrine Burke, 51, and Niall Campbell, 51, have managed to create a remarkable hotel, not by flying in a starchitect from London, stocking the place with fancy products and serving globalized cuisine, but by staying resolutely Donegal. Their guiding principle in se...
