Former NY prosecutor on Trump hush money trial: ‘He’s going to have to sit there’

Former Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Catherine Christian said she will be closely monitoring former President Trump’s behavior in his first criminal trial, scheduled for Monday. Christian noted that unlike his previous civil trials, Trump will “have to sit there” and hear the things hey may not want to. “I will be watching for Donald Trump’s behavior,” Christian said Saturday on MSNBC’s “Meet the Press Now.” “Unlike the civil case of E. Jean Carroll, where he got up and walked out the courtroom because he didn’t like what he was hearing, he can’t do that in a criminal trial. No one can do that.” “None of the prosecutors, the defense attorneys or Donald Trump,” she continued. “He’s going to have to sit there. He will only be able to leave when there’s a break.” ...

The solar eclipse could deliver a $6 billion economic boom: “The whole community is sold out”

Steve Wright said he first heard about the total eclipse on April 8 four years ago, when a visitor booked the first room for the event at Vermont's Jay Peak Resort. Wright, the resort's general manager, said he soon started hearing rumblings from other ski areas. "They said, 'The hype is real'," he recalled, adding that he's never seen anything quite like the visitor excitement over the eclipse. That early prediction turned out to be prescient, with Wright noting that all of Jay Peak's 900 rooms have been fully booked for April 7 — at a cost of about $500 per night — for a year and a half. By comparison, the resort had roughly 80 bookings on the same day last year. Roughly 800 rooms are booked for April 8, the day of the eclipse.  Indeed, tourists are ge...

Mixed Reactions As X.com Gives Free Blue Checks To Some Users

NEW YORK (AP) — Elon Musk’s X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, has begun restoring complimentary blue checks for some of its users, the latest unexpected shift to cause a lot of confusion on the platform. For years, Twitter’s blue checks mirrored verification badges that are common on social media, largely reserved for celebrities, politicians and other influential accounts. That changed months after Musk bought the platform for $44 billion in October 2022.Last year, X began issuing verification checks only to those who paid the starting price of $8 per month for it, and stripping verification badges from many celebrities and other prominent accounts. That also led to confusion, complaints, and a large number of fake accounts pretending to be someone else, blue check included. But l...

New York Gov. Vetoes Bill To Add ‘Emotional Suffering’ Damages For Wrongful Deaths

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has again vetoed legislation that would have changed the state’s wrongful death statute by letting families recover damages for emotional suffering from the death of a loved one.Hochul declined Friday to sign the Grieving Families Act for the second time this year. In a veto memo, the Democrat said she favors changing the statute but the bill lawmakers sent her had the “potential for significant unintended consequences.”Among Hochul’s concerns, she said, were the possibility of increased insurance premiums for consumers and a risk to the financial well-being of public hospitals and other health care facilities.New York is one of just a few states that account only for economic loss in wrongful death lawsuits. Almost all states allow family me...
