NASA will reveal what OSIRIS-REx brought back from asteroid Bennu on Wednesday

NASA will give the public a look at the asteroid sample brought back to Earth by its OSIRIS-REx spacecraft next week. A of the reveal is set for 11 AM ET on Wednesday, October 11. The capsule containing rocks and dust taken from the surface of the near-Earth asteroid “Bennu” touched down at a Department of Defense training site in the Utah desert on September 24, and scientists have since been at work making their initial analyses. In four days, we will be revealing the sample from asteroid Bennu collected from the #OsirisRex mission. Watch the Harvest Moon today: All you need to know about it

Have you ever wondered how you can tell that autumn has arrived? For some, it's the moment they pull their sweaters out of the cupboard or witness the leaves falling from the trees. But this year, skywatchers are in for a special treat as the last supermoon of the year, known as the 'harvest moon,' graces our skies. The harvest moon will make a striking appearance, with hues of red and orange. While this isn't entirely unique, as we've already witnessed 13 supermoons this year, it's still a breathtaking sight. Supermoons are full moons that occur when the moon is at its closest point to Earth, making it appear 14 per cent larger and 30 percent brighter than its smallest counterpart. After this, the next supermoon won't be seen until August 2024.But it's not just scientists and astronomers ...

Tom Hanks Says He’d ‘Clean Toilets’ For A Chance To Go To Space

Tom Hanks says he’d happily take on any task to get a chance to visit space. The actor offered to do some extraterrestrial dirty work in exchange for a rocket ship ride while talking about his immersive film and art exhibit, “The Moonwalkers: A Journey with Tom Hanks,” in an interview with The Telegraph published on Wednesday.“I would like to be the guy in charge of serving food and making jokes to and from the moon,” Hanks said. “If there was room, I would be the guy that cleans up, makes jokes, tells stories and keeps everybody entertained.”“That might be a good idea, I’ll do all the work,” the “Apollo 13” star mused. “I’ll clean the toilet. I’ll serve the food. I’ll fold clothes. I’ll stow the gear. That way the others could be free to do other stuff.”Tom Hanks attends the premiere of "...

Asteroids approaching earth today: All about this close encounter

In an era where space agencies are constantly on alert for happenings in the vast space, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), ESA (European Space Agency), and other global space organisations have harnessed cutting-edge technology to monitor and even deflect asteroids that come dangerously close to Earth. Today, on September 11, 2023, NASA has come out with critical details about an approaching space visitor, Asteroid 2023 RU, emphasising the crucial role such monitoring plays in safeguarding our planet.Details about Asteroid 2023 RUThrough a network of satellites, space-based telescopes, and ground observatories, NASA has been tracking Asteroid 2023 RU. This asteroid is currently en route to Earth and is anticipated to make its closest approach at a distance of approxima...

SpaceX Must Fix 63 Issues Before Its Starship Can Fly Again

As the dust settled following SpaceX’s brief, explosive test launch of Starship in April, both the company and the Federal Aviation Administration dug into investigating the aftermath. The gigantic rocket’s flight lasted just four minutes before it blew up near SpaceX’s Boca Chica launch site on the Texas coast. Images and news reports posted in the days afterward showed boulders of concrete and rebar blasting into the air during liftoff, and there were accounts of particulates raining down on nearby Port Isabel.Today, both SpaceX and the FAA released statements on their joint “mishap investigation,” which was led by the company and overseen by the FAA, with NASA and the National Transportation Safety Board acting as observers. The results had to be evaluated and approved by FAA officials...

India’s Lander Touches Down on the Moon. Russia’s Has Crashed

And nations should avoid cluttering those spots with mechanical detritus, which could complicate future missions. Like campers heading into the backcountry, it’s important to think carefully about what you pack with you and what you take out, Birk says.India’s success doesn’t mean the end of the race toward the moon’s south pole, but it does boost India’s standing. “This will certainly contribute to its status as a rising power with technological prowess. What’s happening in space is a reflection of what’s happening geopolitically on Earth,” says Cassandra Steer, an expert on space law and space security at the Australian National University in Canberra. And while Roscosmos suffered a setback, this isn’t the end of their moon program either, or their role in the new lunar competition. The...
