Around the World With Henry Kissinger

Getting to know Henry Kissinger was a wonderful bonus of serving in the U.S. Senate. Some of the most memorable times I had with him were when he traveled with John McCain and me to the annual security conference in Munich. On one overnight flight, John and I peppered Henry with questions about his peace efforts in the Mideast, the opening with China, ending the Vietnam War and reducing tensions with the Soviet Union.Sunlight spilling in through the plane’s windows awakened me the next morning, and as a religiously observant Jew, I put on my tallit (prayer shawl) and tefillin (small black leather boxes containing excerpts from the Bible that are worn on the head and arms) and said my prayers. When I finished, I was surprised to hear Henry’s sonorous voice: “You know, Joe, I was raised rel...

Munich airport brings forward net zero target by 15 years – Business Traveller

Munich airport has announced a target of reaching net zero by 2035, 15 years earlier than previously planned. The target involves reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions (ie: those the airport can directly influence) by a minimum of 90 per cent. The remaining 10 per cent of emissions will be removed from the atmosphere through measures including turning a commercial forest into a ‘climate forest’, enabling “carbon dioxide to be removed from the atmosphere and subsequently captured for the long term when the timber is used in construction or furniture”. The airport said measures were planned in four areas: Energy supply – including the use of renewable natural gas (biomethane) for its in-house cogeneration plant, the expansion of photovoltaics, the purchase of electricity from renewable sources...

Lufthansa partners with Airbus and Munich airport for Power-To-Liquid fuel research – Business Traveller

Lufthansa has signed a Letter of Intent with organisations including Airbus and Munich airport for “a broad-based research collaboration on Power-to-Liquid (PtL) aviation fuels”. The agreement – which also involves MTU Aero Engines and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) – is intended to accelerate the technology selection, market introduction and industrial scaling of PtL aviation fuels in Germany. PtL is considered by some to be the next generation of Sustainable Aviation Fuels, using regeneratively generated electricity, water and CO2 from the atmosphere to create a syngas from which sustainable aviation fuel can be produced. Lufthansa said that the collaboration would also include the testing of pure PtL (ie: without the addition of fossil kerosene) in order to gain knowledge for the a...

Lufthansa introduces fast-track security for all customers on selected routes from Munich – Business Traveller

Lufthansa has announced a new fast-track security initiative for customers travelling on selected routes from its Munich hub. The carrier said on LinkedIn that those passengers flying from Munich to Berlin, Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Cologne can now use new fast-track lanes situated at the airport’s central security checkpoint in Terminal 2. Lufthansa added that the lanes were for use “independent of class and status”, and had been designed to shorten the time spent at the security checkpoint, “especially for business travellers on flights to selected destinations”. The airline said that monitors display customer information regarding which departures the lanes are valid for, and noted that the services would be suspended “during vacation periods”, then the fast-track lanes would be availab...

Munich airport trials smart baggage trolleys – Business Traveller

Munich airport has launched a trial of new baggage trolley technology at its Terminal 2. The smart baggage trolleys feature a tablet through which passengers can scan their boarding pass to receive flight information and updates in real time. In addition to details of their boarding gate, passengers can also select facilities including shops and restaurants, with the tablet then guiding them through the airport and highlighting offers based on their location. The six-month trial is being conducted in partnership with Danish developer Intelligent Track Systems (ITS), with the trolleys available for hire free of charge after security in Terminal 2. This summer British Airways launched a trial of new digital wayfinding maps at its Heathrow T3 and T5 hubs, with information on arrival and dep...

Rosewood to open Munich property in September – Business Traveller

Rosewood Hotels and Resorts is set to open its first property in Germany next month, with a hotel in the Bavarian capital.
