One of these concept lunar vehicles could join NASA’s Artemis V astronauts on the moon

Three companies are vying for the opportunity to send their own lunar vehicle to the moon to support NASA’s upcoming Artemis missions. The this week that it’s chosen Intuitive Machines, Lunar Outpost and Venturi Astrolab to develop their lunar terrain vehicles (LTV) in a feasibility study over the next year. After that, only one is expected to be selected for a demonstration mission, in which the vehicle will be completed and sent to the moon for performance and safety tests. NASA is planning to use the LTV starting with the Artemis V crew that’s projected to launch in early 2030.The LTV that eventually heads to the moon’s south pole needs to function as both a crewed and uncrewed vehicle, serving sometimes as a mode of transportation for astronauts and other times as a remotely operated...

The moon could get its own time zone. Here’s why.

NASA to decide the moon's time zone NASA to decide the moon's time zone 00:24 The moon could soon get its own time zone. The White House is directing NASA to work with other government agencies to develop a lunar-based time system called Coordinated Lunar Time, abbreviated as LTC. The Biden administration has given the space agency until the end of 2026 to hammer out the new system.According to a Tuesday memo from the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy, the goal is t...

The White House tells NASA to create a new time zone for the Moon

On Tuesday, The White House published a policy memo directing NASA to create a new time standard for the Moon by 2026. Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC) will establish an official time reference to help guide future lunar missions. It arrives as a 21st-century space race emerges between (at least) the US, China, Japan, India and Russia. The memo directs NASA to work with the Departments of Commerce, Defense, State, and Transportation to plan a strategy to put LTC into practice by December 31, 2026. International cooperation will also play a role, especially with signees of the Artemis Accords. Established in 2020, they’re a set of common principles between a growing list of (currently) 37 countries that govern space exploration and operating principles. China and Russia are not part of that gro...

Tom Hanks Says He’d ‘Clean Toilets’ For A Chance To Go To Space

Tom Hanks says he’d happily take on any task to get a chance to visit space. The actor offered to do some extraterrestrial dirty work in exchange for a rocket ship ride while talking about his immersive film and art exhibit, “The Moonwalkers: A Journey with Tom Hanks,” in an interview with The Telegraph published on Wednesday.“I would like to be the guy in charge of serving food and making jokes to and from the moon,” Hanks said. “If there was room, I would be the guy that cleans up, makes jokes, tells stories and keeps everybody entertained.”“That might be a good idea, I’ll do all the work,” the “Apollo 13” star mused. “I’ll clean the toilet. I’ll serve the food. I’ll fold clothes. I’ll stow the gear. That way the others could be free to do other stuff.”Tom Hanks attends the premiere of "...

India’s Lander Touches Down on the Moon. Russia’s Has Crashed

And nations should avoid cluttering those spots with mechanical detritus, which could complicate future missions. Like campers heading into the backcountry, it’s important to think carefully about what you pack with you and what you take out, Birk says.India’s success doesn’t mean the end of the race toward the moon’s south pole, but it does boost India’s standing. “This will certainly contribute to its status as a rising power with technological prowess. What’s happening in space is a reflection of what’s happening geopolitically on Earth,” says Cassandra Steer, an expert on space law and space security at the Australian National University in Canberra. And while Roscosmos suffered a setback, this isn’t the end of their moon program either, or their role in the new lunar competition. The...

Isro reduces lander module orbit bringing it closer to Moon

The Isro on Sunday said it successfully reduced the orbit of the Chandrayaan-3 mission's Lander Module (LM), further bringing it nearer to the moon. The national space agency also said that the LM would now undergo internal checks. The LM, comprising the lander Vikram' and rover Pragyan', is expected to touch down on the lunar surface on August 23 evening, it said. The second and final deboosting (slowing down) operation has successfully reduced the LM orbit to 25 km x 134 km. The module would undergo internal checks and await the sun-rise at the designated landing site. The powered descent is expected to commence on August 23, 2023, around 1745 Hrs IST, Isro said in a post on 'X' (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. The LM of Chandrayaan-3 successfully separat...
