Saving money helps in the long run | Opinion

A couple months back, I had convinced myself I needed some noise-canceling headphones. Sure, I have AirPods already, but I figured it’d be nice to study in public without getting distracted by everything around me.Specifically, I decided I needed the newest Sony XM5s, and quickly found a deal on eBay. 200 bucks later, you can guess what’s collecting dust in my living room. Many college students like myself are using income in a different way than when we were younger. We’re stressed and busy, so we can more easily justify making big purchases with the cash we’re working for, if only to feel a little something. While it’s not bad to treat yourself every once in ...

How Masters first-place prize money payouts have increased over time

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Unlike the weekly professional tour stops, major championships aren’t a job. The best golfers in the world don’t tee it up at the four marquee events for the prize money payouts, but the trophies and high finishes often come with a considerable cash bonus. Over the years at the Masters, dating back to the first-ever tournament in 1934, the green jackets at Augusta National Golf Club have offered lucrative cash prizes that have steadily increased as time passes by. Across the 88 tournaments, there have been 53 increases in the winner’s share, including at this year’s Masters. Whoever dons the green jacket in 2024 will take home a cool $3.6 million, up from the $3.24 million Jon Rahm banked last year. From $1,500 to $3.6 million, here’s how first-place prize money payouts hav...

As the countdown to summer begins, some are feeling the burn in their wallets as inflation continues to affect everything from gas prices to food. The latest casualty: parents experiencing the sticker shock of summer camp.Jamie Aderski, a New Jersey mom of two, made a popular video on TikTok that highlighted concerns for parents trying to get their children enrolled in camps and fund them. Aderski said costs have even become too pricey at her neighborhood recreational centers, jumping at least 10% each summer over the past few years. Spots are sometimes taken as early as January."It's something that's kept me up at night thinking about, 'Well, what am I gonna do with my kids for the summer?' And I've kind of cobbled together a plan, but it's still not enough." ...

Why a CT legislative committee declined vote on state budget

In a rare move, a key legislative committee has refused to vote as lawmakers are leaving the state budget largely intact as they head toward final negotiations with Gov. Ned Lamont in the coming month. The legislature traditionally makes a series of changes — large and small — in the package that the governor unveils in early February. But this year, lawmakers will instead focus on a more narrow list of top Democratic policy priorities that include public higher education, non-profit organizations that provide state services, and mental health care for children by boosting Medicaid rates for doctors and other providers. The fiscal baseline will be the recommendations that the legislature had already approved for the second year of the two-year budget. State Rep. Toni Walker, D-New Haven, ...
