Banning Zuckerbucks Isn’t About Trump

Louisiana is the latest state to restrict private funding for elections, after voters on Saturday backed a constitutional amendment, 73% to 27%. Grants to election administrators are often referred to as Zuckerbucks, after the millions that Facebook impresario Mark Zuckerberg poured into the pandemic voting of 2020. To Donald Trump, it was a case of election rigging. But it’s unlikely that Mr. Zuckerberg’s money mattered to the outcome, and a new academic study circulating among election analysts argues exactly that. “While counties that favor Democrats were much more likely to apply for a grant, we find that the grants did not have a noticeable effect on the presidential election,” write Apoorva Lal and Daniel Thompson, the latter of whom is a political-science professor at the University...

It is the first of nine sessions Schumer has said will begin this fall to discuss the hardest questions that regulations on AI will seek to address, including how to protect workers, national security and copyright...

X appears to slow load times for links to several news outlets and rival platforms

New York CNN  —  Link loading times to some Twitter competitors and news media sites posted to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, appeared to be delayed or throttled for much of Tuesday. Links posted to X that directed to sites including the New York Times, Reuters, Facebook, Substack and X competitors Bluesky and Threads took around 5 seconds to load — a notable slowdown from the typically nearly instantaneous loading times, according to observations by CNN reporters. Many other sites, such as NBA.com, CNN, retailer Target and other sites did not appear to be affected by the issue. The delays were first reported by users of the technology forum Hacker News. The re...
