There are 4.8 billion reasons why other leagues are watching the fallout from ‘Sunday Ticket’ case

LOS ANGELES -- Professional sports leagues have 4.8 billion reasons to review how they distribute out-of-market broadcasts after Thursday's judgement against the NFL in the “Sunday Ticket” case in U.S. District Court.“It’s going to require other leagues to take a close look at their model and make sure that the means by which they’re providing consumer choice really does ensure true choice,” said Christine Bartholomew, vice dean and professor in the University of Buffalo's School of Law. “What happened here, at least according to the jury, was that the NFL had really suppressed consumer choice. Not only did they steer the consumers towards using satellite TV, it meant that they had to buy the whole package.”The jury of five men and three women determined the NFL violated antitrust laws in...

Executor of O.J. Simpson’s estate plans to fight payout to the families of Brown and Goldman

LAS VEGAS -- The executor of O.J. Simpson’s estate says he will work to prevent a payout of a $33.5 million judgment awarded by a California civil jury nearly three decades ago in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the families of Simpson’s ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. Simpson’s will was filed Friday in a Clark County court in Nevada, naming his longtime lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne, as the executor. The document shows Simpson’s property was placed into a trust that was created this year.LaVergne told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the entirety of Simpson’s estate has not been tallied. Under Nevada law, an estate must go through the courts if its assets exceed $20,000. Simpson died Wednesday without having paid the lion’s share of the civil judgment that was awar...

Disney says in lawsuit that DeSantis-appointed government is failing to release public records

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Disney has filed a lawsuit claiming that the oversight government for Walt Disney World, which was taken over by appointees of Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier this year, has failed to release documents and properly preserve records in violation of Florida public records law.Disney said in the lawsuit filed Friday that the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, often referred to as CFTOD, has been so slow in fulfilling its public records duties that it has failed to respond completely to a request the company made seven months ago when it paid more than $2,400 to get emails and text messages belonging to the five district board members appointed by DeSantis.Disney, DeSantis and the DeSantis appointees already are battling for control of the government in two pending lawsuit...

Democrats Peddle a ‘Child Labor’ Deception

Ave Maria, Fla.How desperate are Democrats to hold on to suburban voters, especially moms? So desperate that they’re peddling the lie that Republicans are bringing back child labor. Democrats and their media allies have repeated this falsehood since the start of the year, most recently targeting my home state of Florida.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Justin Trudeau blasts Facebook for blocking news as Canada’s wildfires rage

CNN  —  Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau blasted Facebook for “putting corporate profits ahead of people’s safety” as the social media platform continues to block news content while wildfires rage in Canada’s Northwest Territories and British Columbia. “It is so inconceivable that a company like Facebook is choosing to put corporate profits ahead of ensuring that local news organizations can get up-to-date information to Canadians, and reach them where Canadians spend a lot of their time; online, on social media, on Facebook,” Trudeau said during a news conference Monday. Some 60,000 people across the Northwest Territories and British Columbia have been placed under evacuation orders since thi...

A raid on a Kansas newspaper likely broke the law, experts say. But which one?

TOPEKA, Kan. -- A central Kansas police chief was not only on legally shaky ground when he ordered the raid of a weekly newspaper, experts said, but it may have been a criminal violation of civil rights, a former federal prosecutor added, saying: “I'd probably have the FBI starting to look.”Some legal experts believe the Aug. 11 raid on the Marion County Record's offices and the home of its publisher violated a federal privacy law that protects journalists from having their newsrooms searched. Some believe it violated a Kansas law that makes it more difficult to force reporters and editors to disclose their sources or unpublished material.Part of the debate centers around Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody’s reasons for the raid. A warrant suggested that police were looking for evidence that...
