LNER trials integration of British Sign Language on customer information screens – Business Traveller

LNER has become the first rail operator in the UK to trial sign language videos on its departure information screens. Several scenes at Doncaster Railway station now display videos translating updates into British Sign Language (BSL), including the departure time of services, the train operator, destination, calling points and platform number. Any changes to departure times or platforms will also be detailed via sign languages videos, as will updates in the event of delays or cancellations. LNER is working with Doncaster Deaf Trust and Communication Specialist College Doncaster on the project, with the trial set to run throughout December. The operator said that if the trial proves successful it will look to introduce integrated BSL videos on to further screens across its network. Earlie...

Turkey rules the table. But a poll finds disagreement over other Thanksgiving classics

Thanksgiving may be a time for Americans to come together, but opinion is divided over what's on the crowded dinner table. We mostly agree on the deliciousness of pumpkin pie, say, but are split over the eternal turkey question of dark meat versus white meat. And don't even ask if marshmallows belong on sweet potatoes — it could cause a ruckus.About 3 in 10 U.S. adults (32%) who will celebrate Thanksgiving this year say turkey is their favorite dish in the holiday feast, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Stuffing or dressing (19%) and mashed potatoes (6%) come in second and third.“Thanksgiving — it’s about turkey,” said Ralph Caya, 71, from Pensacola, Florida, who participated in the survey. On the other hand, Vaidehi Upadhyaya, a 2...

Classes on celebrities are engaging a new generation of law students

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A South Dakota law professor typically teaches about dense topics like torts and natural resources. But next semester, he and his fearless students are shaking things up by turning their attention to Taylor Swift. Sean Kammer wanted his legal writing course to draw on music and art to help his students reconsider legal language and craft persuasive arguments. The self-described “Swiftie” thought a focus on the cultural icon was also a way to connect with his students.Never in his wildest dreams did Kammer expect the attention that the announcement generated — the class filled up quickly and jealous alumni even reached out.“The reaction from students has been exciting,” he said. “If we can have fun while we’re exploring some of these complex theoretical problems or issu...

My Grandmother and the Canine Detective

My grandmother, who is ninety-two, has moved three times in her life. She was born in a small town in the province of Shandong, China, and, when she was twenty-three, she took a boat to Shanghai. When she was sixty-three, she moved to Sydney, Australia—where I was born—and then, when she was eighty-five, came with me and my mother to New York. There are a few similarities across these places: all three are port cities—populous, but not the capital—that grew fat off the trade of an eastern coast. Another constant in her life, at least in the past twenty or so years, has been the Austrian police-procedural television show “Inspector Rex,” which is about a crime-fighting dog.“Rex” débuted in 1994, the year I was born, and ran for eighteen seasons over the course of twenty-one years. A standa...
