Illinois Concedes on Pregnancy Centers

Illinois has been trying to use its fraud laws to target pro-life pregnancy help centers, and Gov. J.B. Pritzker declared this summer that he was “confident” the law was constitutional. If he still believes that, then Mr. Pritzker ought to explain why the state is backing down in federal court, unless he’s too embarrassed now by his role in this cautionary tale of Democratic overreach. In high political dudgeon after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the Illinois Legislature amended the state’s Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act to go after the speech of “limited services pregnancy centers,” taking clear aim at pro-life groups while exempting abortion providers. This week state Attorney General Kwame Raoul agreed to a permanent injunction to prevent the law from be...

School Choice Dies in Illinois

Sometimes the worst political scandals occur in plain sight, even if most of the press corps chooses not to notice. That’s what happened last week in Illinois, where the Democratic-union machine killed scholarships for 9,600 low-income children. The state and national teachers union made a priority of blocking an extension of the Invest in Kids program that provided a 75% state tax credit for donations to help families afford private schools. The unions claim the credit drained money from public schools, but public funding has increased nearly $2 billion since Invest in Kids began under former Gov. Bruce Rauner. Only 35% of Illinois children read at grade level, according to Wirepoints, so no wonder there are more than 20,000 children on the Invest in Kids waiting list. Copyright ©2023 Do...

J.B. Pritzker and the Illinois Children

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker says he wants his state to continue its Invest in Kids scholarship program, but only if he doesn’t have to spend political capital to pass it. That’s the message between the lines of his statement last week that he wouldn’t block the program, which gives scholarships to more than 9,000 low-income students, if someone else in Springfield can make it happen.“I will support it if it comes to my desk to extend the program in whatever form,” Mr. Pritzker said. “I mean, I can’t imagine it would show up in some form that I would be unwilling to. But again, the reality is that the legislature needs to go through this process.” Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Gov. Pritzker Takes Abortion Fight National With Self-Funded Group

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is taking his abortion-rights advocacy nationwide, introducing on Wednesday a political organization to fund similar efforts outside Illinois, a state that legalized abortion by statute even before the Supreme Court invalidated the right to undergo the procedure.Think Big America has already funded support for constitutional amendments favoring abortion access in Ohio, Arizona and Nevada. The effort also enhances the profile of the Democratic governor and multibillionaire equity investor and philanthropist. Pritzker has said he’s focused on serving as a Midwest governor, but speculation is rampant that he harbors presidential ambitions.Fourteen states now ban abortion and debate elsewhere rages since the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 2022 d...

Chinese Companies and Your Tax Dollars

It isn’t easy luring corporations to Illinois these days, so Gov. J.B. Pritzker celebrated when the state landed a big electric-vehicle battery plant in September. The real winner, however, is Gotion, the Chinese company that is collecting taxpayer financing to subsidize its EV manufacturing. Mr. Pritzker boasted that the new $2 billion factory would bring 2,600 green jobs to the Land of Lincoln and represents “the most significant new manufacturing investment in Illinois in decades.” The company’s decision was helped by a $536 million Illinois subsidy package, including $213 million in tax benefits, a 30-year property tax freeze and $125 million from the state-lending program Invest in Illinois. J.B. Pritzker’s Abortion Money Game

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is moving to extend his influence beyond the Land of Lincoln by launching a new nonprofit called Think Big America, which intends to support abortion referendums in other states. It’s pretty cheeky coming from a guy who signed a ban on out-of-state money in Illinois judicial elections. Two years ago Mr. Pritzker signed a law to block Illinois judicial campaigns from accepting contributions from people in other states. This May it was struck down as unconstitutional by a federal judge, but by that point the law had already served its short-term purpose of helping liberal judges in their 2022 elections. Mr. Pritzker and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul did not appeal.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7...
