How Israel Is Defending Against Iran’s Drone Attack

On Saturday, Iran launched more than 200 drones and cruise missiles at Israel, a response to an strike earlier this month against Iran's embassy in Syria. As the drones made their way across the Middle East en route to their target, Israel has invoked a number of defense systems to impede their progress. None will be more important than the Iron Dome. The Iron Dome, operational for well over a decade, comprises at least 10 missile-defense batteries strategically distributed around the country. When radar detects incoming objects, it sends that information back to a command-and-control center, which will track the threat to assess whether it’s a false alarm, and where it might hit if it’s not. The system then fires interceptor missiles at the incoming rockets that seem most likely to hit an...

Trump holds his last rally before his hush money trial

SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Former President Donald Trump on Saturday lit into New York prosecutors and the criminal hush money case they brought against him during his last rally before what he called a “communist show trial” begins Monday.“I will be forced to sit fully gagged. I’m not allowed to talk. They want to take away my constitutional right to talk,” said Trump, who has been barred from publicly discussing potential witnesses and jurors but not the judge or prosecutors. “I’m proud to do it for you,” Trump told a crowd in northeast Pennsylvania. “Have a good time watching.”Trump spoke as Israel was fighting off a retaliatory drone attack from Iran that threatened to tip into a regional war in the Middle East. After a short mention of the atta...

Netanyahu says Israel preparing for scenarios in areas other than Gaza | External Affairs Defence Security News

4 min read Last Updated : Apr 12 2024 | 11:20 PM IST Israel is keeping up its war in Gaza but is also preparing for scenarios in other areas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday, amid concern that Iran was preparing to strike Israel in response for the killing of senior Iranian commanders.   "Whoever harms us, we will harm them. We are prepared to meet all of the security needs of the State of Israel, both defensively and offensively," he said in comments released by his office following a visit to the Tel Nof air force base in southern Israel.   Israel has been bracing for possible Iranian retaliation for the killing of a senior general and six other Iranian officers in an airstrike on the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus on April 1. In Rare Interviews, Hamas Leaders Discuss Oct. 7 Attack And Gaza Crisis

DOHA, Qatar ― Six months into a war Hamas started ― with more than 33,000 Palestinians dead, more succumbing to famine daily and Israel determined to continue its aggressive campaign against the organization with robust American military support ― the militant group says it is confident it will wield significant influence in the future, come what may in Gaza. Hamas believes its shock Oct. 7 attack on Israel achieved its goal of reigniting global concern for decades-long Palestinian subjugation, and it views the Israelis and Americans as intent on deepening the fighting rather than taking genuine steps toward an Israeli-Palestinian settlement. Additionally, it does not see itself as responsible for civilian deaths during that assault, in which Hamas-led fighters killed about 1,200 Israelis...

Community raises money, supports Palestinian-owned businesses at Los Gatos event – NBC Bay Area

Community members rallied together in Los Gatos Thursday as they raised funds for the people in Gaza. Despite the rain in Los Gatos, many people stood in line with their umbrellas, buying tacos, pastries and coffee to support Palestinian-owned businesses. Some even came from the East Bay. “I think it’s important to show up in spaces like this. Especially, if we may not be Palestinian, but just make sure people know that we are all supporting and here for the cause,” said Dublin resident Joanna Giron. Businesses here included El Halal Amigos based in San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood and Kenz Coffee. “The magnitude of this event and the timing of it is huge. There are over 32,000 victims in Gaza right now,” said Hisham Abdelfattah with El Halal Amigos. More than 32...

José Andrés: Israel Deliberately Killed 7 Aid Workers In Gaza

Chef and humanitarian José Andrés has accused Israel of deliberately launching the airstrikes that killed seven aid workers with his World Central Kitchen charity in Gaza, calling the incident a “direct attack” on humanitarian workers trying to provide food and supplies to desperate Palestinians. In a New York Times opinion article published early Wednesday, the world-renowned chef paid tribute to the workers who were killed in Monday’s attack, saying they were the “best of humanity.” One of the victims was Palestinian. The others came from Australia, Poland, Britain, Canada and the United States.“Their work was based on the simple belief that food is a universal human right,” he wrote. “It is not conditional on being good or bad, rich or poor, left or right. We do not ask what religion yo...

Israel’s Highest Court Strikes Down Controversial Law to Curb Its Power

By Carrie Keller-Lynn and Anat PeledUpdated Jan. 1, 2024 1:36 pm ETTEL AVIV—Israel’s highest court has struck down a controversial judicial overhaul law enacted last year by the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that would have limited the justices’ power.Israel’s Supreme Court ruled against a central piece of a judicial overhaul that Netanyahu was pushing before the war in Gaza erupted last October. The court struck down a law, which was passed in July and was akin to a constitutional amendment, that would have taken away the court’s powers to abrogate government decisions it deems to be “unreasonable in the extreme.”Copyright ©2024 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
