Iran Adds to Pressure on U.S. With Nuclear Program Acceleration

Updated Dec. 26, 2023 6:06 pm ETIran has tripled production of nearly weapons-grade uranium in a move likely to deepen its confrontation with the West as Tehran helps allied militias to attack Israel and U.S. forces in the region. Iran’s decision to triple its production rate of near-weapons-grade uranium marks the collapse of quiet diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran to ease tensions. It comes amid a proliferation of flashpoints between the U.S. and Iran, whose proxies have repeatedly traded fire with U.S. forces in the Middle East since the bloody conflict between Israel and Hamas erupted on Oct. 7. U.S. and European navies are also shooting down drones launched by the Iran-backed Houthis in the Red Sea. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 879...

China’s Yuan Is Quietly Gaining Ground

Chinese assets have had a terrible year—but China’s currency is gaining ground as an international payments option. The yuan’s status as a global currency still faces a huge obstacle in the form of China’s own capital controls. Even so, rising willingness to conduct trade in yuan could help insulate China’s economy, at least to an extent, in the event sanctions were imposed in a hypothetical future conflict with the West. It also could become a source of structural support for the yuan itself, even assuming weaker-than-expected Chinese growth in the years to come.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Venezuela Breaks Another Promise – WSJ

Well, that was predictable. On Nov. 30 the Maduro regime in Venezuela ignored the U.S. deadline to lay out a process to reinstate opposition candidates for a 2024 presidential election. Will the Biden Administration take it lying down? In return for that Maduro promise, made Oct. 17 with the democratic opposition, the Biden Administration eased sanctions for six months on the export of Venezuelan oil and new investment in the country. The U.S. also lifted bans on dealing with the government-owned mining company and on trading some Venezuelan securities. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
